It was the 68th time this event was held. It is organized by UEFA. This was also the 31st season since the tournament changed its name. It used to be called the European Champion Clubs' Cup.

Manchester City won the final match. They beat Inter Milan 1–0. The final game was played in Istanbul, Turkey, at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium. This was Manchester City's first time winning the title.

The Atatürk Olympic Stadium was supposed to host the final in 2020. It was also planned for the 2021 final. However, both times, the games were moved because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because Manchester City won, they got to play in the next Champions League. They also earned the right to play against Sevilla. Sevilla won the 2022–23 UEFA Europa League. This special match is called the 2023 UEFA Super Cup. Manchester City also got to join the 2023 and 2025 FIFA Club World Cup tournaments.

Real Madrid were the champions from the year before. They had won the title 14 times, which is a record. But Manchester City beat them in the semi-finals this season.
