It was the 52nd time this competition was held. It's the second most important club football tournament in Europe, after the UEFA Champions League.

The final match was played in Budapest, Hungary, at the Puskás Aréna. Sevilla from Spain played against Roma from Italy. The game ended 1–1 after extra time. Sevilla then won 4–1 in a penalty shootout. This was Sevilla's seventh time winning the trophy, which is a record!

Because Sevilla won, they automatically got a spot in the next season's 2023–24 UEFA Champions League. They also earned the chance to play in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup. In the Super Cup, they would play against the winner of the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League.

The team that won the Europa League the year before, Eintracht Frankfurt, played in the Champions League this season. They could not defend their Europa League title because they moved up to the Champions League.

How Teams Qualify for the Europa League

A total of 57 teams from 33 different countries in Europe took part in the 2022–23 UEFA Europa League. These teams came from countries that are part of UEFA, which is the main football organization in Europe.

  • Some teams got a direct spot in the Europa League.
  • Other teams joined the Europa League after being knocked out of the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League. This means they started in the Champions League but then moved to the Europa League.
  • The team that won the UEFA Europa Conference League (another European tournament) also got a spot in the Europa League if they didn't already qualify for the Champions League.
  • The number of teams from each country depends on how well their clubs have performed in European competitions over the past few years.
