The Montenegro national football team (Montenegrin: Fudbalska reprezentacija Crne Gore) represents Montenegro in men's international football. This team has been playing since 2007. The Football Association of Montenegro controls the team. Their home stadium is the Podgorica City Stadium in Podgorica.
Montenegro's team is one of the newest international football teams. They joined FIFA and UEFA in 2007. This happened after Montenegro became an independent country in 2006. Their first official international match was against Hungary in March 2007. They first played in FIFA World Cup qualifiers in 2010.

Montenegro's Football Journey
How the Team Started
After Montenegro became independent from Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, they wanted their own football team. UEFA, the European football body, was open to including Montenegro. But they needed FIFA, the world football body, to approve a separate Montenegrin Football Association first. This approval came later.
In October 2006, Montenegro became a temporary member of UEFA. They became a full member in January 2007. Montenegro's first FIFA World Ranking was 199th, which was the last spot.
First Matches and Early Success
On January 26, 2007, the Montenegro Football Association became a full member of UEFA. The team played its first official friendly match against Hungary. This game was on March 24, 2007, in Podgorica. Montenegro won 2–1 in front of 12,000 fans. Striker Mirko Vučinić scored the team's first goal. On May 31, 2007, FIFA accepted Montenegro as its 208th member.
Zoran Filipović was Montenegro's first coach. Under him, the team won eight games, drew eight, and lost seven out of 23 matches. He left in January 2010. During his time, Montenegro's FIFA ranking improved to 73rd place. In 2008, Montenegro had a great 3–1 win against Norway.
First Competitive Games
Montenegro played its first World Cup qualifier on September 6, 2008. They played against Bulgaria at home. The game ended in a 2–2 draw, with Mirko Vučinić and Igor Burzanović scoring for Montenegro. In their next match, they drew 0–0 with the Republic of Ireland. They also had a close 2–1 loss to Italy.
Montenegro drew 0–0 with Georgia and 2–2 with Cyprus. On September 5, 2009, they lost 4–1 to Bulgaria. Later, they drew 1–1 with Cyprus. Finally, Montenegro got its first competitive win, beating Georgia 2–1. They finished fifth in their group.
The Golden Era of Montenegrin Football
During the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifiers, the team did very well. They started with a 1–0 win over Wales. They then beat Bulgaria 1–0 and Switzerland 1–0. They also had an impressive 0–0 draw against England in London.
In June 2011, Montenegro reached its highest FIFA ranking ever, at 16th place. On October 7, they came back from 2–0 down to draw 2–2 against England. This result helped Montenegro get a play-off spot for Euro 2012. They were just two matches away from qualifying! However, they lost 3–0 on total score to the Czech Republic in the play-offs.
For the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Montenegro was in a tough group. They started with a 2–2 draw against Poland. On September 11, they had their biggest win ever, beating San Marino 6–0. They also beat Ukraine 1–0 in Kyiv. Montenegro was leading their group for a while.
However, their luck changed. They lost 4–0 to Ukraine at home. They also had a 1–1 draw in Poland. Their 2014 World Cup journey ended with a 5–2 home loss to Moldova. They finished third in their group.
Ups and Downs: Recent Campaigns
For the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers, Montenegro started with a 2–0 win over Moldova. But they struggled after that. A match against Russia in March 2015 was stopped due to crowd trouble. Russia was later awarded a 3–0 win. Montenegro finished fourth in their group.
In the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Montenegro was in a group with strong teams like Poland and Denmark. They started well, drawing 1–1 with Romania and beating Kazakhstan 5–0. They also beat Denmark 1–0. However, they lost to Armenia and Poland. Despite later wins against Armenia and Kazakhstan, and a 1–0 win over Romania, they couldn't qualify.
Montenegro also had a tough time in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League. They were in a group with Serbia and Romania. They only won two games, both against Lithuania. This meant they missed a chance to qualify for the UEFA Euro 2020 play-offs.
A Difficult Period
The UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers were the hardest in the team's history. They started with a 1–1 draw against Bulgaria. Then they lost 1–5 at home to England. During this time, their coach and two players from Serbia left the team due to political reasons. Montenegro drew 1–1 with Kosovo but lost 0–3 to the Czech Republic twice.
They also drew 0–0 with Bulgaria and lost 0–2 to Kosovo. Their worst defeat came on November 14, 2019, when England beat them 7–0 in London. Montenegro finished the qualifiers without a single win. They scored only three goals and let in 22. Key players like Stevan Jovetić and Stefan Savić also had many injuries.
A Strong Comeback
In the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League, the team did much better. They finished first in their group, above Luxembourg, Azerbaijan, and Cyprus. This earned them a promotion to League B. They also played an important role in the qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They finished 4th in a group with strong teams like the Netherlands, Turkey, and Norway.
Home Ground and Training Facilities
Montenegro plays its home matches at the Podgorica City Stadium. This stadium can hold 15,230 people. For international games, the capacity is usually between 10,700 and 13,000.
Camp FSCG: The Training Hub
The Football Association of Montenegro also has its own training ground called Camp FSCG. It was built in 2007 and covers a large area. It has six football pitches with stands and lights. It also has the "House of Football," which is the main office for the Football Association.
Camp FSCG is very important for Montenegrin football. All Montenegrin national teams, both men's and women's, train there. Many local teams from Podgorica also use it. The camp is good enough for Montenegrin First League games and UEFA competitions for young players.
Team Identity
Nickname and Colors
The team's official FIFA code is MNE. Their nickname is "The Brave Falcons" (Hrabri Sokoli).
Montenegro's home colors are red with gold trim. These colors match the country's flag. Their away kits are usually white with red trim. The current kits are made by the Italian company Legea.

Loyal Supporters
The Podgorica City Stadium is often full for Montenegro's competitive matches. Many people think the stadium is too small for the national team. For example, 30,000 tickets were wanted for a World Cup qualifier against Italy in 2009. For a Euro 2012 qualifier against England in 2011, 40,000 tickets were needed.
Montenegro's most dedicated fans are called Ultra Crna Gora (Ultra Montenegro). They stand and sing for the whole game, both at home and away. They sit in the north and south stands of the stadium. They often put on special displays at the start of games. This group includes many smaller fan clubs from different parts of Montenegro.

Players of the National Team
In international football, players usually play for only one national team. But if a new country is formed, players might be able to play for that new country even if they played for the old one. For Montenegro, a player can play for the team if:
- They were born in Montenegro;
- At least one of their parents or grandparents was born in Montenegro;
- They have lived in Montenegro for five years in a row.
Because of family ties, many players could play for both Serbia and Montenegro. But once a player plays in a competitive match for either country, they cannot play for any other nation.

These players were called up for games in October and November 2024.
Caps and goals are updated as of November 19, 2024, after the match against Turkey.

Tournament Performance
Montenegro has played in seven qualification rounds for the World Cup or European Championship. They have never qualified for the main tournament. Their best result was reaching the play-offs for UEFA Euro 2012.
Montenegro first tried to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. They finished fifth in their group. They did better in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, finishing second in their group. This led them to the play-offs, but they lost to the Czech Republic.
In the qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Montenegro finished third. Two years later, for UEFA Euro 2016, they finished fourth in their group. They were third again in their 2018 World Cup qualifying group. Their worst performance was in the qualifiers for UEFA Euro 2020. They finished last in their group without winning any games.
