What is the Supercup?
The Supercup is a single match that happens before the new football season starts. It's a way to kick off the year with a big game between two champions. Think of it as a "champion vs. champion" showdown!
How the Supercup Started
The Supercup first began in 1987. Back then, it was called the DFB-Supercup and was run by the German Football Association (DFB). It was played every year until 1996. For a few years, from 1992 to 1996, it was even known as the "Panasonic DFB-Supercup" because of a sponsor.
After 1996, the Supercup was replaced by a different competition for a while. But football fans missed it! So, in 2008, an unofficial Supercup match was played. Then, in 2010, the competition officially returned as the DFL-Supercup.
New Rules for the Supercup
Since 2010, there's a cool rule for the Supercup. If one team wins both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal in the same year (this is called winning the "double"), they don't play themselves! Instead, they play against the team that finished second in the Bundesliga. This makes sure there are always two different teams competing.
If the game is a draw after 90 minutes, there's no extra time. The winner is decided right away by a penalty shoot-out. The match is usually played at the home stadium of the cup winners. If a team wins the double, it's played at the home of the Bundesliga runners-up.
Renaming the Supercup
Starting from the 2025–26 season, the competition was renamed the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. This was done to honor Franz Beckenbauer, a legendary German football player.
Supercup Matches and Winners
Here's a list of the teams that have won the Supercup over the years. Remember, since 2010, if a team wins both the league and the cup, the league's second-place team plays in the Supercup.
