Marco Reus (born 31 May 1989) is a German professional footballer. He plays as a forward or attacking midfielder for Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy.
Reus started his youth career at Borussia Dortmund. He then moved to Rot Weiss Ahlen before joining Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2009. His best season there was in 2012. He scored 18 goals and made 12 assists in the Bundesliga. This helped his team get a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
After the 2011–12 season, Reus returned to his hometown club, Borussia Dortmund. With Dortmund, he won the DFB-Pokal twice, in 2017 and 2021. He also won the DFL-Supercup in 2013 and 2019. Reus reached the Champions League final twice with Dortmund. These were in 2013 and 2024. He was also the club captain from 2018 to 2023. Reus scored 170 goals and made 132 assists for Borussia Dortmund. He is one of only three players to reach 100 Bundesliga goals and 100 assists. He was named German Footballer of the Year twice. He was also the Bundesliga Player of the Season three times. Reus is seen as one of Borussia Dortmund's best players ever.
After his contract with Dortmund ended in 2024, Reus joined LA Galaxy in August 2024. This was his first time playing outside Germany. Four months after joining, Reus helped LA Galaxy win the MLS Cup. This was his first league title.
Reus played 48 games for the German national team. He played in two major tournaments: Euro 2012 and the 2018 World Cup.

Club Career Highlights
Starting Out at Rot Weiss Ahlen
Marco Reus was born in Dortmund, Germany. He began playing football for Post SV Dortmund in 1994. In 1996, he joined the youth teams of Borussia Dortmund. He played there until 2006, when he moved to the U-19 team of Rot Weiss Ahlen.
In his first year at Ahlen, he played as an attacking midfielder. He scored in his first two games for the club's second team. The next year, he joined Ahlen's first team. They played in the German third division. He played 16 games and scored one goal. This goal helped his team get promoted to the 2. Bundesliga. In the 2008–09 season, Reus became a key player. He played 27 games and scored four goals.
Time at Borussia Mönchengladbach

On 25 May 2009, Reus signed a four-year contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach. He scored his first Bundesliga goal on 28 August. It was a solo run from 50 meters against Mainz 05. He became a strong goalscorer for the club.
On 20 August 2010, Reus scored two goals in a Bundesliga game against Mainz 05. At the start of the 2011–12 season, Reus was in great form. He scored 10 goals in his first 13 matches. This included his first Bundesliga hat-trick in a 5–0 win against Werder Bremen.
Returning Home to Borussia Dortmund
First Seasons and Champions League Final
On 4 January 2012, Reus signed with his old club, Borussia Dortmund. He joined them for €17.1 million on a five-year deal. He said he wanted to play for a club that could win the league and play in the Champions League. Reus officially rejoined Dortmund on 1 July.
In his first league game with Dortmund on 24 August, he scored a goal. Dortmund won 2–1 against Werder Bremen. On 29 September, Reus scored two goals in a 5–0 win against his former club, Mönchengladbach.
On 3 October, in his second Champions League game, he scored the first goal. Dortmund drew 1–1 with Manchester City. On 6 November, he scored a spectacular goal against Real Madrid in a 2–2 draw. On 21 November, Reus scored Dortmund's first goal in a 4–1 win over Ajax. This helped Dortmund qualify for the next round of the Champions League.
On 16 February 2013, Reus scored three goals against Eintracht Frankfurt. On 9 April 2013, Reus scored a crucial goal in injury time against Malaga. Dortmund won 3–2 and moved to the next round of the Champions League. They then beat Real Madrid to reach the final. In the final against Bayern Munich, Reus helped Dortmund get a penalty. However, Bayern won the trophy.
Continued Success and Goals

On 27 July 2013, Reus scored the first goal in the 2013 DFL-Supercup against Bayern Munich. He also scored the last goal as Borussia Dortmund won 4–2. On 18 August, Reus scored a penalty as Dortmund beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2–1. He then scored two goals against SC Freiburg. Reus finished the 2013–14 season with 23 goals and 18 assists.
In the 2014–15 Bundesliga season, Reus scored a goal and assisted another against FC Augsburg. Dortmund won 3–2. On 22 October, Reus scored and assisted in a 4–0 Champions League win against Galatasaray. On 10 February 2015, Reus signed a new contract with Dortmund until 2019. Dortmund reached the DFB-Pokal final but lost 3–1 to Wolfsburg.
On 5 August 2015, Reus scored in a 5–0 win against Wolfsberger AC in the Europa League. On 15 August, he started the 2015–16 season with a goal and an assist against his former club, Borussia Mönchengladbach. On 28 August, he scored three goals in a 7–2 win against Odds BK. Reus finished the 2015–16 season with 23 goals and 8 assists in 43 games.
Winning Trophies and Captaincy
On 22 November 2016, Reus returned from injury. He scored twice and assisted once in an 8–4 Champions League win against Legia Warsaw. On 3 December, he assisted three goals in a 4–1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Four days later, Reus scored a late goal in a 2–2 draw against Real Madrid. Dortmund won their Champions League group.
During the 2017 DFB-Pokal Final, Reus got injured. However, Dortmund won the match, giving Reus his first major trophy.
On 10 February 2018, Reus returned to play against Hamburg. He scored his first goal since his return in a 1–0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. On 9 March, Reus extended his contract with Dortmund until 2023. Reus finished the season with 7 goals in 15 games.
Before the 2018–19 season, Reus became the club captain. On 21 August 2018, Reus scored the winning goal in extra time against SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the DFB-Pokal. Reus scored his 100th Bundesliga goal as Dortmund beat RB Leipzig 4–1. On 27 September, he scored two goals, reaching 100 goals for Borussia Dortmund in all competitions.
On 10 November 2018, he scored two goals in the second half of Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich. Dortmund won 3–2. Reus ended the season with 21 goals and 14 assists. He was voted the 2019 Germany Footballer of the Year.
Later Years at Dortmund
At the start of the 2019–20 season, Reus and his team beat Bayern Munich 2–0 in the 2019 DFL-Supercup. This was his second win of that competition.
By February 2020, Reus had 12 goals in 26 games. However, a muscle injury kept him out for the rest of the season.
On 6 April 2021, Reus scored in a 1–2 loss to Manchester City in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. He became Dortmund's all-time Champions League top scorer with 18 goals. He won the DFB-Pokal for the second time that season. Dortmund won 4–1 against RB Leipzig.
On 13 February 2022, Reus scored his 150th goal for Borussia Dortmund in a 3–0 win against Union Berlin.
On 3 March 2023, Reus scored in a 2–1 win over RB Leipzig. He became the joint second all-time goalscorer for Borussia Dortmund with 159 goals. On 18 March, he scored two goals in a 6–1 win over 1. FC Köln. This made him the lone second top scorer for his club with 161 goals. On 27 April, Reus signed a one-year contract extension until 2024. Dortmund finished as Bundesliga runner-up. They drew 2–2 on the last day against 1. FSV Mainz 05. This was the closest Reus came to winning a league title with Dortmund.
On 6 July 2023, Reus announced he would step down as club captain. On 1 November, Reus scored the winning goal in a 1–0 win over TSG Hoffenheim in the DFB-Pokal. Three days later, Reus played his 400th match for Borussia Dortmund. He became the sixth player to reach this milestone. Three weeks later, Reus scored his first Champions League goal of the season. It was in a 3–1 win over AC Milan. On 24 March 2024, Reus scored his last Champions League goal. It was in a 2–0 win against PSV Eindhoven. On 1 May 2024, Reus helped Dortmund win 1–0 against Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg. Two days later, he announced he would leave Dortmund at the end of the season. On the final matchday of the 2023–24 season, he scored a free-kick goal and assisted another. This was in a 4–0 win over Darmstadt. It was his last home match. On 1 June, he played his last game for Dortmund in the Champions League final. Dortmund lost 2–0 to Real Madrid. He ended his final season with nine goals and seven assists.
Joining LA Galaxy
On 15 August 2024, Major League Soccer club LA Galaxy signed Reus. He received the shirt number 18. This was a nod to his 2008–09 professional debut season.
He played his first game against Atlanta United on 24 August. He scored and assisted, earning Player of the Match. On 30 November 2024, Reus helped LA Galaxy win 1–0 against Seattle Sounders. This sent them to the MLS Cup final.
On 7 December 2024, Reus and his team won the MLS Cup. They beat New York Red Bulls 2–1. This was his first league title in his professional career. He played 11 matches, scored one goal, and made three assists in his first season in the United States.
International Career with Germany
On 11 August 2009, Reus played his first game for the Germany under-21 team. On 6 May 2010, he was called up to the senior team. He had to miss the 2010 FIFA World Cup due to injury.
On 7 October 2011, he made his senior team debut against Turkey. He scored his first goal for Germany on 26 May 2012 against Switzerland. On 22 June, he scored in a 4–2 win against Greece in the UEFA Euro 2012 quarter-final. Germany reached the semi-final but lost to Italy. Reus and his team were awarded a bronze medal.
Reus played a key role in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification. He scored five goals and made three assists. He was chosen for the World Cup finals. However, he had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. Germany went on to win the trophy without him. Reus returned to international play on 3 September 2014 against Argentina.
During qualification for UEFA Euro 2016, Reus scored once. He was not selected for the tournament due to a groin injury.
On 2 June 2018, Reus returned to international duty after two years. He was part of Germany's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On 17 June, Reus made his World Cup debut against Mexico. On 23 June, Reus started and scored his first World Cup goal. Germany beat Sweden 2–1. He also assisted Toni Kroos' winning goal. However, Germany was knocked out after losing to South Korea.
In May 2021, Reus decided not to play in the UEFA Euro 2020 due to tiredness. In November 2022, Reus missed the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to an ankle injury.
His last game for the national team was on 11 November 2021. It was a 9–0 win against Liechtenstein. He scored once and assisted twice in that game.
Playing Style
Reus is known for being a very skilled player. He is fast, agile, and has great technical abilities. He is also good at shooting with both feet. He is known for his smart movement on the field and his ability to score goals. Reus is also a hard-working player who passes the ball well. He has good vision, which helps him create chances for his teammates.
Reus can play in many attacking positions. He can play as a second striker, a central forward, or a winger on either side. He prefers the left side because it lets him cut inside and shoot with his stronger right foot. He can also play as a central attacking midfielder. Besides his skills, Reus is also known for his leadership. He was the captain of Borussia Dortmund.
In 2012, Reus was voted the Footballer of the Year (Germany). He was also named in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2013.
Personal Life
Reus is named after the famous Dutch football player, Marco van Basten. His parents decided to name him Marco because of Van Basten's famous goal in the Euro 1988 final.
Reus started dating German model Scarlett Gartmann in December 2015. They had their first child in March 2019 and got married later that year. They welcomed their second child in January 2024.
Reus has said that if he wasn't a professional football player, he would want to be a pilot.
Reus was the cover athlete for the video game FIFA 17.
In March 2020, Reus and his wife, Scarlett, donated €500,000. This money helped people and small businesses in his hometown of Dortmund during the COVID-19 pandemic.
