The Los Angeles Galaxy is a professional soccer team from the Greater Los Angeles area. They play in Major League Soccer (MLS) as part of the Western Conference. The Galaxy started playing in 1996. They were one of the first ten teams in the league. The team is known as the most successful in MLS history.

The Galaxy was started in 1994. Anschutz Entertainment Group owns the team. In their first few years, the team played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Since 2003, they have played at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The Galaxy has a big rivalry with the San Jose Earthquakes. This rivalry is called the California Clásico. They also used to play against Chivas USA in a game called the SuperClasico. Chivas USA stopped playing in 2014. A new team, Los Angeles FC (LAFC), started in 2018. The new rivalry with LAFC is called "El Tráfico".

The Galaxy has won a record six MLS Cups. They also reached the final four other times. They won the Western Conference regular-season title eight times. They have won the Supporters' Shield four times. The team also won two U.S. Open Cups and one CONCACAF Champions' Cup title. In 2024, the Galaxy won their sixth MLS Cup. This broke the record for most goals scored in a playoff season with 18 goals.

In 2007, the team became famous worldwide when they signed English player David Beckham. He came from Real Madrid. This was the biggest player signing in MLS history at that time. Other famous international players have also played for the Galaxy. These include Robbie Keane, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Marco Reus, Luis Hernández, and American star Landon Donovan. Landon Donovan is the team's all-time leading scorer. In 2019, Forbes magazine said the club was worth about $480 million. This made them the second most valuable team in the league.

Team History

How the Galaxy Started (1996–2000)

CobiJones
Cobi Jones played for the Galaxy from the very first season until 2007.

The LA Galaxy was one of the first ten teams in Major League Soccer. The name "Galaxy" was chosen because Los Angeles is home to the "stars" of Hollywood. The team began playing in the league's first season in 1996.

In their first season, the Galaxy finished first in the Western Conference. They played in the first MLS Cup final but lost to D.C. United. In 1997, they started slowly but improved to make the playoffs. They finished second in their conference and lost to the Dallas Burn. In 1998, the Galaxy had a great season, winning 24 of 32 games. They beat the Dallas Burn but lost to the Chicago Fire in the semi-final.

The Galaxy finished first in the Western Conference again in 1999. They also won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup that year. However, they lost to D.C. United in the MLS Cup final. In 2000, the Galaxy finished second in their division. They lost to the Kansas City Wizards in the playoffs. That same year, Los Angeles won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. They were one of only three American clubs to win this tournament.

The year 2001 was another good one for the Galaxy. They won the Open Cup and reached 1,000 all-time points. Cobi Jones scored the team's 300th goal. But they lost to Landon Donovan and the San Jose Earthquakes in the playoffs. The club finished first in the Western Conference for the fifth time. The Galaxy was supposed to play in FIFA's Club World Cup as CONCACAF champions, but the tournament was canceled.

Winning the First MLS Cup (2002)

In 2002, the Galaxy won their first MLS Cup. It was their fourth time in the final. They beat the New England Revolution 1–0. In 2003, the team played more away games because their new stadium was being built. They finished fourth that year. The Galaxy improved in 2004, finishing second. They lost to the Wizards in the final.

In 2005, the Galaxy signed Landon Donovan from San Jose. The team won the Open Cup again. They also made the playoffs for the tenth season in a row. This made them the only team to do so in the league's first ten years. They won the 2005 MLS Cup, beating the New England Revolution in extra time.

The 2006 season started with a sad event. Doug Hamilton, the team's general manager, passed away. The team finished fifth in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs for the first time. Midway through the season, Steve Sampson was replaced as head coach by Frank Yallop. The team reached the U.S. Open Cup final but lost to the Chicago Fire.

The David Beckham Years (2007–2012)

In March 2007, Herbalife became the team's main shirt sponsor. Four months later, the club signed David Beckham from Real Madrid. His first game was at Home Depot Center in front of a huge crowd. Many celebrities were there. He came on as a substitute in a game against Chelsea. This game brought a lot of TV attention. The Galaxy reached the final of the North American SuperLiga but lost on penalty kicks. They almost made the playoffs but were eliminated by the Chicago Fire. After the season, Cobi Jones retired. Frank Yallop resigned as head coach. Ruud Gullit became the new coach, becoming the highest-paid coach in MLS history. Cobi Jones returned as an assistant coach. The team went on a tour to Australia and New Zealand, setting attendance records. They also played in Asia and finished third in the first Pan-Pacific Championship.

In the 2008 MLS season, the Galaxy had a tough time. They went seven games without a win. This caused them to fall out of playoff contention. Coach Ruud Gullit resigned, and general manager Alexi Lalas was fired. Bruce Arena took over as coach. However, he could not lead the team to the playoffs for the third year in a row.

After the 2008 season, both David Beckham and Landon Donovan went to play for European clubs on loan. Beckham went to Milan in Italy, and Donovan went to Bayern Munich in Germany. Donovan wanted to stay in Munich, and Beckham wanted to stay in Milan to keep playing for the England team. Milan tried to buy Beckham, but the Galaxy said no. Beckham stayed in Italy until June before returning to LA. Donovan was not offered a contract by Bayern and came back to the U.S. for the 2009 MLS season. In a book, Donovan openly criticized Beckham for how he handled the loan deals. But they later became friends again when Beckham returned.

The Galaxy finished the 2009 season at the top of the Western Conference. They were also runners-up for the MLS Supporters' Shield. They made it to the 2009 MLS Cup final. They beat Chivas USA and Houston Dynamo to get there. In the final, they tied 1–1 with Real Salt Lake but lost on penalty kicks. By reaching the final, they qualified for the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League.

After their successful 2009 season, Donovan and Beckham went on loan again. Donovan went to Everton. Beckham returned to Milan, where he injured his Achilles tendon. This meant he missed the 2010 World Cup for England and most of the Galaxy's 2010 season.

In 2010, the Galaxy stayed at the top of the league and won the Supporters' Shield. This was the first time MLS had a balanced schedule. They then lost to FC Dallas in the Western Conference Final.

In 2011, the team added Robbie Keane, who was the Republic of Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer. They won their fourth Supporters' Shield. This was the second-best points total in MLS history. They then won their third MLS Cup, beating the Houston Dynamo 1–0 in the final. This was the Galaxy's first MLS Cup win in regular time. Their wins in 2002 and 2005 were in overtime.

In January 2012, Beckham signed a new two-year deal with the Galaxy. However, in November 2012, Beckham announced he would leave the team at the end of the 2012 season. On December 1, 2012, the Galaxy won their second straight MLS Cup. They beat the Houston Dynamo 3–1. Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez scored the tying goal. Donovan scored a penalty kick, and Keane sealed the win with another penalty kick.

Five League Championships (2013–2016)

The Galaxy finished third in the Western Conference in 2013. They reached the conference semi-finals but lost to Real Salt Lake. They also reached the semi-finals of the 2012–13 CONCACAF Champions League. They lost to Mexican team Monterrey.

In 2014, after losing to Seattle Sounders FC for the Supporters' Shield, the team entered the MLS playoffs. They beat Real Salt Lake and then Seattle to reach the MLS Cup. They played the New England Revolution in the 2014 MLS Cup and won 2–1 in overtime. This made them five-time champions, a league record. At the end of the season, longtime Galaxy and United States national team player Landon Donovan retired.

On January 7, 2015, the LA Galaxy announced they signed Steven Gerrard. He was a famous player from Liverpool. He joined the team in July 2015. The club also signed Mexican star Giovani dos Santos in July. He was a product of the Barcelona academy. Dos Santos quickly made an impact, scoring in his first club game and his first league game. In his first five games, he scored four goals and had five assists.

Rebuilding the Team (2016–2023)

Before the 2016 season, Omar Gonzalez, a long-time center-back, left the Galaxy.

On November 22, 2016, general manager and head coach Bruce Arena left to coach the United States national team. He took most of the Galaxy's coaching staff with him. Peter Vagenas became the new general manager, and Curt Onalfo became the new head coach.

The team tried to use more players from their youth academy. But many players got injured. The team struggled, and Curt Onalfo was fired on July 27, 2017. Sigi Schmid became the new coach. Under Schmid, the club finished last overall in the league. This was only the fourth time the club missed the playoffs.

Zlatan Ibrahimović (48116890751)
Ibrahimović playing with the Galaxy in 2019.

In March 2018, the team signed Zlatan Ibrahimović. He made his first appearance in the first El Tráfico match against LAFC. He scored two goals, helping the Galaxy come back from 0–3 down to win 4–3. One of his goals won the MLS Goal of the Year Award. The Galaxy had defensive problems throughout the season and missed the playoffs again.

After the 2018 season, the Galaxy signed Ibrahimović to a new contract. On March 1, 2019, the team released Giovani dos Santos.

In the 2019 season, Guillermo Barros Schelotto became the new head coach. The Galaxy also added new players like Diego Polenta, Cristian Pavón, Favio Álvarez, and Uriel Antuna. With these new players and young talent like Efraín Álvarez, the Galaxy finished fifth in the West and made the playoffs. Ibrahimović had a great season, scoring 30 goals. This was the second-highest in the league that year. In the playoffs, the Galaxy beat Minnesota United FC but lost to LAFC. Ibrahimović left the club in November.

In December 2022, MLS punished the Galaxy for how they signed Cristian Pavón in 2019. The club lost $1 million in money they could use for players. Club president Chris Klein was also suspended. The team was not allowed to sign international players in the summer of 2023.

The club signed Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez from La Liga club Sevilla in January 2020. He became the highest-paid player in the league. At the end of the season, the team missed the playoffs. Coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto was fired. Dominic Kinnear became the interim manager. On January 5, Greg Vanney was announced as the new manager.

Under Vanney, the Galaxy just missed the MLS playoffs in 2021. In 2022, the team improved a lot. Hernández scored 18 goals. They also signed Riqui Puig and Gastón Brugman. The Galaxy finished fourth in the West. They beat Nashville SC in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs. But they lost to LAFC in the conference semifinals. Hernández was named the team's player of the year.

MLS Cup Champions Again (2023–Present)

The Galaxy signed former German international Marco Reus in 2024.

Before the 2023 season, team president Chris Klein was suspended. This was because of issues with the 2019 signing of Cristian Pavon. The league's punishments meant the team could not sign international players in the summer of 2023. Despite this, Klein signed a new contract with the team. Because of this, Galaxy fan groups announced they would not attend home games until Klein was removed.

The Galaxy had their worst start to a season in 2023. They did not win any of their first seven games. After a loss in May, fans were seen arguing with manager Greg Vanney. On May 30, 2023, the Galaxy announced they had parted ways with Klein.

In 2024, the Galaxy signed new attackers Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec. They let Douglas Costa and Chicharito leave. This showed a new plan for the club. They focused on good players who could do well in MLS, not just world-famous ones. The Galaxy almost finished first, ending with the same points as LAFC but losing on tiebreakers. During the season, Riqui Puig, Dejan Joveljić, Paintsil, and Pec scored 54 of the team's 69 goals. This was their highest goal total since 1998. The Galaxy beat Colorado Rapids in the first round of the playoffs. They scored nine goals in that round. Then they beat Minnesota United 6–2. They won against the Seattle Sounders 1–0 in the Western Conference final. This sent them to their first MLS Cup since 2014. Puig helped Joveljić score the winning goal. The next day, it was found that Puig had torn his ACL and would miss the rest of the season. On December 7, the Galaxy beat the New York Red Bulls 2–1 to win their sixth MLS Cup. This was their first win in ten years. The Galaxy also set a record for most goals in playoff history with 18.

In 2025, the team set a new record for the longest time without a win at the start of an MLS season.

The LA Galaxy's main colors are navy blue, gold, and white. Their home uniform is white, and their away uniform is blue. These colors were chosen in 2007 when David Beckham joined the team. This was part of a big change to the team's look. Before 2007, the Galaxy used different colors. These usually included gold, teal green, and white with black. Their first jersey in 1996 had black and teal halves.

The Galaxy has had two main logos. The first logo was gold, teal, and black. It had the word "Galaxy" over a golden swirl. The logo changed in 2007 when David Beckham arrived. The new logo is a blue shield with a gold border. It has the team name and a "quasar" at the top.

A quasar is a bright, star-like object in space. The quasar on the Galaxy's shield was also on the 1957 Seal of Los Angeles County.

The name "Galaxy" was created by Nike when the league started. Nike also made the team's first uniforms.

How the Club Works

The Galaxy made a profit for the first time in 2003. They were the first MLS team to do so. After moving to the new Home Depot Center, more people came to games. Money from sponsors, parking, and food also increased.

A Forbes report in 2015 said the LA Galaxy was the second richest team in MLS. They made $44 million in revenue and were worth $240 million. The Galaxy earns more from team sponsors and local TV rights than any other MLS team. They have the highest yearly income of any MLS team. They are also the third highest in CONCACAF (North and Central America) and seventh highest in all of the Americas.

Cozmo is the Galaxy's mascot. He has dark blue skin, yellow eyebrows, and white eyes. These colors match the team's home uniform. Cozmo replaced the team's first mascot, "Twizzle." Twizzle also looked like he was from outer space but was more human-like.

Galaxy Star Squad

The Galaxy Star Squad is the team's official cheerleading group. They go to events hosted by the Galaxy, like autograph sessions. You can often see them at the stadium during games, giving away scarves and cheering for the team.

Fan Groups

The Angel City Brigade started in 2007. Their goal was to create a fun and lively atmosphere at Dignity Health Sports Park for the Galaxy.

The LA Riot Squad formed after the team lost the 2001 MLS Cup. The Galaxy's goalkeeper, Kevin Hartman, challenged a group of fans to create a fan group of 100 people by the start of the 2002 season. If they did, he promised them a keg of beer.

The Galaxians are the first and original fan group of the LA Galaxy. They started in 1996, during the Galaxy's first season in MLS.

The Galaxy Outlawz is the newest fan group, started in 2019. They now join the Galaxians and the Angel City Brigade in the new standing-only section.

Victoria Block is a new standing-only section built in 2020. It replaced the bleachers in sections 120 to 123. It is now the main section for all the fan groups: the Galaxians, Angel City Brigade, and Galaxy Outlawz.

Team Rivalries

San Jose Earthquakes

The Galaxy's oldest rivalry is the California Clásico against the San Jose Earthquakes. This is one of the most intense and long-lasting rivalries in American soccer. It started when MLS began. Their playoff and final matches have made the rivalry even stronger. Some people also say it's like the traditional sports rivalries between Northern and Southern California.

Los Angeles FC

When Los Angeles FC (LAFC) joined the league in 2018, a new rivalry began. This is a rivalry between two teams in the same city. The Galaxy's record against LAFC, up to 2022, was 7 wins, 5 losses, and 5 ties. This includes 0 wins and 2 losses in the playoffs. This rivalry is called "El Tráfico" and has become one of the most exciting in the league.

Chivas USA

From 2005 to 2014, the Galaxy had a rivalry with Chivas USA. They shared the same stadium. This rivalry was called the SuperClasico. The Galaxy won most of these games, winning 22 out of 34 matches. This was the only rivalry in MLS where two teams shared a stadium until Chivas USA stopped playing in 2014.

Broadcasting Games

Since 2023, every Galaxy match can be watched on MLS Season Pass through the Apple TV app. Some games are also shown on FOX Sports channels like FOX or FS1. Before this, Galaxy games were shown on different TV stations in Southern California for 27 years.

At the end of the 2011 season, the Galaxy made a big deal with Time Warner Cable (now Charter Spectrum). It was a ten-year, $55 million deal, the biggest local media contract in MLS history. Before this, games were shown on Fox Sports West or Prime Ticket. In 2012, English-language games were on KDOC. Spanish-language games were on KWHY.

Until 2023, ESPN showed most games on its ESPN+ platform for viewers outside the local market. They also had national broadcasts on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC. When Univisión showed a game on its main network, UniMás, or TUDN, it was also available on Twitter.

After MLS Season Pass started in 2023, Joe Tutino became the only radio announcer for all Galaxy games. You can listen to the radio broadcast on the club's website and social media pages.
