*Club domestic league appearances and goals

Edson Michael Buddle was born on May 21, 1981. He is an American former professional soccer player. Today, he is the head coach for the USL League Two team, Westchester Flames. Edson is one of only 13 players who have scored 100 goals in the history of Major League Soccer, which is a huge achievement!

Edson Buddle played as a forward. He started his career in North America in 2000 with the Long Island Rough Riders. From 2001 to 2010, he played in Major League Soccer for teams like the Columbus Crew, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC, and LA Galaxy. He also played for a German team, FC Ingolstadt 04, for a year before returning to the LA Galaxy. Edson also played for the United States national team, even appearing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Edson Buddle's Soccer Journey

Starting in College and Minor Leagues

Edson Buddle was born in New Rochelle, New York. He played college soccer for one year at State Fair Community College. In 1999, he helped his team win the NJCAA Division I National Championship. Edson began his professional career in 2000 with the Long Island Rough Riders. He scored eleven goals and made four assists, helping his team win their division. He was even a finalist for the Rookie of the Year award!

Playing for Columbus Crew

Edson's great performance caught the eye of Major League Soccer (MLS) teams. In 2001, the Columbus Crew picked him in the draft. In his first year, he scored three goals. The next year, at just 21 years old, he scored nine goals and helped the Crew win the U.S. Open Cup. Even though he had some injuries, he kept scoring goals for the Crew until 2005.

Time with New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC

Before the 2006 season, Edson was traded to the New York Red Bulls. He scored six goals that year, but he was dealing with a foot injury. In November 2006, he was traded again, this time to Toronto FC. He didn't score any goals in his 10 games for Toronto. However, he did help set up the club's very first goal, passing the ball to Danny Dichio to score.

Joining the Los Angeles Galaxy

In June 2007, Edson Buddle was traded to the LA Galaxy. He scored his first goal for the Galaxy against Real Salt Lake. When the 2008 MLS season started, many people didn't expect Edson to be a main striker for the Galaxy. But he became a very important player, especially when other star players were injured or away playing for their national teams.

Becoming a Star Striker

In 2008, Edson scored two "hat tricks" (three goals in one game!). One was against FC Dallas and another against San Jose Earthquakes. He won the MLS Player of the Week award both times. His teammate, David Beckham, said that Edson was getting better and better. His coach, Ruud Gullit, said Edson had become a "true professional." People noticed that Edson had improved a lot, becoming more confident and scoring many goals.

After scoring five goals in 2009, Edson started the 2010 season incredibly well. He scored seven goals in the first four games! By May, he had scored nine times, which led to a surprise call-up to the national team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He continued to play strongly after the World Cup. In October 2010, the LA Galaxy won the Western Conference and the Supporter's Shield. Edson won the Galaxy's MVP (Most Valuable Player) and Golden Boot (top scorer) awards that year.

Playing in Germany

On January 10, 2011, Edson signed with a German club called FC Ingolstadt 04. He played his first game for them on January 21 and even scored his first goal in that game! He was released by the club in January 2012, becoming a free agent.

Back to the LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids

After leaving Germany, Edson returned to the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, his second time with the team was not as successful. He only scored three goals in 2012, which was his lowest number since his first year in MLS.

In December 2012, Edson was traded to the Colorado Rapids. On August 21, 2014, he made history by becoming only the eighth player to score 100 goals in MLS! He scored this goal with a header from a corner kick. Edson left the Rapids in November 2014 and returned to the LA Galaxy for a third time in March 2015. He became a free agent in December 2015.

Playing for His Country

Edson Buddle also played for the United States national team. He played for the under-20 and under-23 teams, even playing in the 2001 World Youth Championship. He earned his first cap (game) for the senior team on March 29, 2003, in a friendly game against Venezuela.

Seven years later, in May 2010, he was chosen for the team that would play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He scored two goals in a friendly match against Australia on June 5, 2010. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he came on as a substitute in games against England and Algeria.

  • On November 15, 2011, he scored one goal against Slovenia in a friendly game in Slovenia.
