Edson Buddle's Soccer Journey
Starting His Career: College and Minor Leagues
Edson Buddle was born in New Rochelle, New York. He played college soccer for one year at State Fair Community College. In 1999, he helped his team win a national championship. In 2000, Buddle began his professional career. He joined the Long Island Rough Riders in the A-League. He scored eleven goals and made four assists for the team. He was also a finalist for the A-League Rookie of the Year Award.
Playing in Major League Soccer (MLS)
Buddle's strong performance caught the eye of teams in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Time with Columbus Crew
In 2001, the Columbus Crew picked Edson in the MLS SuperDraft. In his first year, he scored three goals. The next year, at age 21, he scored nine goals and helped the Crew win the U.S. Open Cup. He continued to score many goals for the Crew, even though he faced some injuries. In 2004, he scored eleven goals.
Moving to New York and Toronto
Before the 2006 season, Buddle moved to the New York Red Bulls. He scored six goals for them. Later, in 2006, he was traded to Toronto FC. He played 10 games for Toronto but did not score any goals. However, he helped set up the club's very first goal.
Success with LA Galaxy
On June 13, 2007, Buddle was traded to the LA Galaxy. He quickly became an important player for the team. In 2008, he scored two "hat tricks" (three goals in one game). One was against FC Dallas and another against San Jose Earthquakes. His teammate, David Beckham, praised his improvement. Buddle's coach, Ruud Gullit, said he had become a "true professional."
In 2010, Buddle started the season very strong. He scored seven goals in the first four games. By May, he had scored nine times. This led to him being called up to the national team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. After the World Cup, he continued to score many goals. The LA Galaxy won the Western Conference and the Supporter's Shield in 2010. Buddle was named the Galaxy's MVP and won the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals.
Playing in Germany and Returning to MLS
On January 10, 2011, Buddle signed with FC Ingolstadt 04 in Germany. He scored his first goal for the team in his very first game. After about a year, he left the German club.
Back to LA and Colorado
Buddle returned to the LA Galaxy in 2012. However, his second time with the team was not as successful. He scored only three goals that season. In December 2012, he joined the Colorado Rapids. On August 21, 2014, Buddle scored his 100th MLS goal. This made him one of only eight players to reach this milestone. He later had a third short time with the LA Galaxy in 2015 before becoming a free agent.
Playing for His Country: International Career
Edson Buddle played for the United States national soccer team. He played for the under-20 and under-23 teams. He also played in the 2001 World Youth Championship.
His first game for the senior national team was on March 29, 2003, against Venezuela. He didn't play for the team again for seven years. In 2010, he was chosen for the 2010 FIFA World Cup squad. He scored two goals in a friendly match against Australia before the World Cup. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he played as a substitute in games against England and Algeria.
