Jorge Campos Navarrete (born October 15, 1966) is a famous Mexican former football player. He was mostly known for playing as a goalkeeper. However, he was also amazing at playing as a sweeper-keeper and even as a striker!

Campos was a very unique player. He was famous for his exciting, acrobatic style and his super colorful uniforms, which he often designed himself. Even though he wasn't very tall for a goalkeeper, he was incredibly athletic and fast. He was great at jumping and quickly running out of his goal to stop attackers. Many people consider him one of the best goalkeepers of his time.

What made him truly special was his ability to score goals. He scored 35 goals in his career, which is very unusual for a goalkeeper! Most of these goals happened when he played for the UNAM club. Sometimes, he would even start a game as a goalkeeper and then move to play as a striker later in the same match!

Club Career Highlights

Jorge Campos started his football journey in 1988 with a Mexican club called Pumas. At first, another player was the main goalkeeper. Because Jorge wanted to play more, he asked to be a striker instead. He did really well, scoring 14 goals in his first season!

After that, he became the main goalkeeper for Pumas and helped them win the championship in the 1990–91 season. He also won another championship with Cruz Azul in 1997. During this time, he often came into games as a substitute striker.

Campos played for several other Mexican clubs like Atlante, Tigres, and Puebla. He even scored a fantastic bicycle kick goal for Atlante in 1997! In that game, he began as the goalkeeper. But when his team needed a goal, the coach put another goalkeeper in and sent Campos to play as an attacker.

He also played in the United States for the LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer (MLS). He was one of the first big international stars to play in the MLS and became very popular there.

Playing for Mexico

On the international stage, Jorge Campos was the main goalkeeper for the Mexican national team in two FIFA World Cup tournaments: 1994 and 1998. He was also part of the team for the 2002 World Cup, but he didn't play in that tournament. Overall, he played 129 games for his country.

He also played for the Mexican Olympic team at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Campos was sometimes invited to play with a special "Rest of the World Team" against famous clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. His last game for Mexico was a friendly match in 2004.

After Playing Football

After retiring as a player, Jorge Campos became an assistant manager for the Mexican national football team from 2004 to 2006.

Campos has also appeared in commercials for the sports company Nike. In 1996, he was in a famous Nike commercial called "Good vs Evil." In this ad, he played alongside other football legends like Ronaldo and Eric Cantona. They defended "the beautiful game" against a team of evil characters.

He has also been featured in the popular EA Sports' FIFA video game series. You can find him in the Classic XI team in several FIFA games, and as a special "FUT Heroes Card" in newer versions like FIFA 23 and FC 24.

Today, Jorge Campos works as a football commentator for TV Azteca, sharing his knowledge and passion for the game.
