The 2013–14 UEFA Champions League was a super exciting football tournament! It was the 59th time this big competition was held by UEFA. Think of it as the biggest club football tournament in Europe. Teams from all over Europe play against each other to see who is the best.

In this season, Real Madrid from Spain won the championship. They beat their city rivals, Atlético Madrid, in a thrilling final match. The teams that made it to the semi-finals but didn't reach the final were Bayern Munich (who were the champions from the year before) and Chelsea.

How the Tournament Works

The UEFA Champions League starts with many teams, but only 32 make it to the main group stage. These teams are put into groups, and they play against each other. The best teams from each group then move on to the "knockout phase."

The Knockout Phase

The knockout phase is where things get really intense! In this part of the tournament, teams play two matches against each other – one at home and one away. The team that scores more goals over both matches moves on, and the losing team is out. This continues until only two teams are left for the final.

  • Round of 16: 16 teams play, and 8 teams move on.
  • Quarter-finals: The 8 winning teams play, and 4 teams move on.
  • Semi-finals: The 4 winning teams play, and 2 teams make it to the final!
