How the Tournament Works
The UEFA Champions League starts with many teams, but only 32 make it to the main group stage. These teams are put into groups, and they play against each other. The best teams from each group then move on to the "knockout phase."
The Knockout Phase
The knockout phase is where things get really intense! In this part of the tournament, teams play two matches against each other – one at home and one away. The team that scores more goals over both matches moves on, and the losing team is out. This continues until only two teams are left for the final.
- Round of 16: 16 teams play, and 8 teams move on.
- Quarter-finals: The 8 winning teams play, and 4 teams move on.
- Semi-finals: The 4 winning teams play, and 2 teams make it to the final!
Road to the Final
In the 2013–14 season, many famous teams competed. Here's how some of them did:
- Real Madrid beat Schalke 04 in the Round of 16, then Borussia Dortmund in the Quarter-finals, and finally Bayern Munich in the Semi-finals.
- Atlético Madrid beat Milan in the Round of 16, then Barcelona in the Quarter-finals, and Chelsea in the Semi-finals.
This set up an all-Spanish final between two teams from the same city!
