In the 2012–13 season, the top teams got to play in a bigger European competition. This is called the UEFA Champions League. Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer 04 Leverkusen earned spots directly in this big tournament.
However, the teams at the bottom of the table faced a different fate. Fortuna Düsseldorf and SpVgg Greuther Fürth were moved down to a lower league. This league is called the 2. Bundesliga. This means they had to play against different teams next season.
