The History of Wiener Sport-Club
The Wiener Sport-Club was started in 1883. This makes it one of the oldest football clubs in Austria! Their team colours are black and white. For many years, the club wasn't just about football. It also had sections for many other sports. These included fencing, boxing, wrestling, cycling, handball, and even water polo.
Early Successes
The football team had some great times. They won the Austrian Championship three times! These wins happened in 1922, 1958, and 1959. One of their most amazing wins was in 1958. They played against a very strong team called Juventus Turin in the European Champions Cup. This competition is now known as the UEFA Champions League. Wiener Sport-Club won that game by a huge score of 7:0! It was a truly memorable match for the club.
Challenges and Changes
Over the years, the club played many league matches. After playing 2,319 games, the club faced some tough times. In the 1990s, they had financial problems twice. This meant the club had to move down to lower football leagues.
In 2002, the football part of the club became a separate team. This new team is called Wiener Sportklub. They currently play in the Regionalliga Ost, which is the third division of Austrian football.
The Home Ground
The team's home stadium is called the Sportclub-Platz. It is located in a part of Vienna called Dornbach. This stadium was built way back in 1904. It is the oldest football ground in Austria that is still used for matches today!
There's a special part of the stadium called the "Friedhofstribüne." This means "graveyard stand." It got this name because it is right across from the Dornbach cemetery.
Club Legends
One of the most famous players for Wiener Sport-Club is Erich Hof. He played for the club from 1954 to 1969. Later, he even became the coach of the Austrian national football team. He also managed the WSC team three different times. He is a true legend for the club.
