Exploring Marloes Sands

Marloes Sands is a special place for many reasons, from its unique rock formations to its history as a movie set. It's a perfect example of the stunning natural beauty found along the Welsh coast.

Getting There and Around

The beach is located southwest of the village of Marloes. There's a National Trust car park nearby, which you can use for a daily charge, or for free if you are a National Trust member. From the main road, a path leads directly down to the beach.

It's good to know that there are about three ways to get onto the beach. This can be really helpful if the tide starts to come in quickly! Besides the main path from Runwayskiln, you can also find an access point to the north, close to Gateholm Island. This one needs a bit of climbing over rocks. There's also another way to the south, with steps that lead to the middle part of the beach.

Amazing Rocks and Cliffs

The cliffs around Marloes Sands are made of different layers of rock. You'll see red sandstone and grey shale. A really cool feature on the beach is called the "Three Chimneys." These are three tall, thin lines of very hard rock, made of silurian sandstone and mudstone, that stand upright. There used to be four chimneys, but one of them fell down during a big storm back in 1954.

Marloes Sands on the Big Screen

Did you know Marloes Sands has been a star in its own right? This scenic beach has been used as a filming location for some well-known movies:

  • Snow White & the Huntsman (filmed in September 2011).
  • The Lion in Winter (filmed in 1968).
