Discover Marsh Island

Marsh Island is a flat, marshy island in Iberia Parish. It sits in southern Louisiana, between Vermilion Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico is to its south.

The island is separated from the mainland of Louisiana by several bays. These include East Cote Blanche Bay to the east and West Cote Blanche Bay to the north. Vermilion Bay is to its northwest, and Southwest Pass is to its west.

Island Environment

The plants on Marsh Island are mostly marshy types. This means it has lots of grasses and wetland plants. The island has almost no trees. It is a very important habitat for many animals.

The island covers about 259 square kilometers (or 99 square miles) of land. As of the year 2000, no people lived on Marsh Island.

Amazing Wildlife

Marsh Island is home to the Marsh Island Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a safe place for many wild birds. It is especially important for species like the snow goose. These geese travel long distances to find food and shelter here.

Many other animals also live on the island. You can find alligators, different kinds of ducks, and other waterfowl. The waters around the island are full of crabs and shrimp. This makes the island a great place for recreational fishing. People enjoy coming here to catch fish.

The refuge helps protect these animals and their natural homes. It ensures they have a safe place to live and grow.
