The Marshal of the Sejm (pronounced Mar-sha-wek Say-moo) is a very important leader in the Polish Parliament. Think of them as the main speaker or chairperson of the Sejm, which is like one of the two main groups of lawmakers in Poland. This job has a long history, going all the way back to the 1400s! Today, the full name for this role is the Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. The word Marszałek is the Polish term for a parliamentary speaker.

A Look Back: The Marshal's Long History
The role of the Marshal has changed over many centuries in Poland. Long ago, during the time of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, there were also "Sejmik Marshals" who led local assemblies. Later, in different historical periods like the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria and the Kingdom of Poland, similar leadership roles existed with different names.
In the Second Polish Republic (from 1918 to 1939), the elected representatives chose one person to be the Marshal of the Sejm. This person would lead the Sejm for their entire term. For a while, the Marshal of the Sejm even had the important job of stepping in for the President of Poland if the President was unable to serve. Today, the Marshal of the Sejm once again has this important duty of becoming the Acting President if needed.
What the Modern Marshal Does
Today, the Marshal of the Sejm has many important responsibilities. They are the main leader of the Sejm's work. The Marshal makes sure that all the meetings and discussions in the Sejm follow the rules. They also lead two important groups: the Presidium of the Sejm and the Convention of Seniors. These groups help manage the daily activities and plans of the Sejm.
The Marshal also chooses the Chief of the Chambers for both the Sejm and the Senate. Since 1989, if the President of Poland cannot do their job, the Marshal of the Sejm steps in as the Acting President. This shows how crucial their role is in the country's government. The Marshal also has helpers called Deputy Marshals, who are also elected representatives.
How the Marshal is Chosen
The Marshal of the Sejm is chosen by the members of the Sejm themselves. This happens through a vote where all the elected representatives decide who they want to lead them.
Recently, on November 18, 2025, the Sejm held a vote to choose its new Marshal. Włodzimierz Czarzasty was elected to this important position. He received enough votes from the representatives to become the new leader of the Sejm. This election is a key part of how Poland's government works, ensuring that the Sejm has a strong leader chosen by its members.
