Marshall Mount is a small area near Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. It's located between the towns of Dapto and Albion Park. It's known for its rural feel and a bit of interesting history!

History of Marshall Mount

Early Days and Henry Osborne

In 1829, a rich Irish immigrant named Henry Osborne was given a large piece of land. This land was about 2,560 acres (10.36 square kilometers) in the Dapto area. He named it Marshall Mount.

Henry Osborne and his wife, Sarah, moved there in 1833. Over time, Henry bought even more land. His property grew to stretch from Mullet Creek in the north to the Macquarie Rivulet in the south.

Marshall Mount House and Community

By 1841, the Osbornes finished building their new home, Marshall Mount House. In 1843, Henry Osborne held a cattle show on his property. This event was so successful that it led to the start of the Illawarra Agricultural Association. This group helped local farmers.

By the 1850s, the Osborne family became very important in the region. In 1851, Henry Osborne was chosen to be a member of the Legislative Council. This was like being a representative in the first local government assembly.

Changes Over Time

A school opened in Marshall Mount in 1859. After Henry Osborne passed away in the same year, Marshall Mount Road became a public road for everyone to use.

Marshall Mount mostly stayed with Osborne's family until 1890. Then, Hamilton Osborne, a descendant, sold parts of the property to new owners.

Today, Marshall Mount is still a farming area. In 2016, about 142 people lived there. The NSW State Government has plans to allow new homes to be built in Marshall Mount.

Fun Things to See

Marshall Mount has a few interesting spots:

  • Marshall Mount Old Time Dance: This is a dance event that happens every two weeks. It's run by the Marshall Mount Progress Association and is a fun gathering for the community.
  • Marshall Mount Public School and Schoolmaster's Residence: These buildings opened in 1859. They are still standing on Marshall Mount Road. They show what buildings looked like a long time ago.
  • Marshall Mount House: This house was built in a colonial style. It stands on the same spot as the original Osborne family home. Since 1978, it has been recognized as a heritage building. This is because of its importance and its original owner, Henry Osborne.
