Marshfield was a small community located in Vienna Township, Scott County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It was about three miles northwest of Scottsburg. Today, it is considered an "extinct town," meaning it no longer exists as a populated place. The GNIS lists it as a historical location.
Marshfield's History
Marshfield played a role in early American transportation. It served as a "water stop" for trains on the Jeffersonville, Madison and Indianapolis Railroad. Trains would stop here to refill their water tanks.
A Famous Event in 1868
Marshfield is known for a significant historical event that happened in 1868. It was the site of one of the earliest train robberies in American history. A group called the Reno Gang, from nearby Jackson County, was involved in this event.
Today, you can find an Indiana historical marker at the location. This marker tells the story of the train robbery and marks the spot where it happened.
