Marshland is a small, unincorporated community in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, United States. It's not a city or a village with its own government, but a group of homes and businesses. You can find Marshland along Wisconsin Highway 35 and Wisconsin Highway 54. It's about 8.5 miles (13.7 km) east-southeast of Fountain City.
History of Marshland
Marshland got its start because of railroads. In 1870, the La Crosse, Trempealeau & Prescott Railroad built tracks through the area. This connected Marshland to other towns.
Later, in 1873, another railroad called the Green Bay & Minnesota Railroad also laid tracks here. This made Marshland an important spot where two different train lines met. This railroad eventually became part of the Green Bay and Western Railroad.
Why is it Called Marshland?
A post office was opened in Marshland in 1875. It stayed open until 1904. The community was named "Marshland" because the land nearby used to be a marsh. A marsh is a type of wetland, like a swamp, where the ground is often wet and soft.
