Martín Adán, a famous Peruvian poet.

Martín Adán (born October 27, 1908, in Lima, Peru – died January 29, 1985) was the pen name of Rafael de la Fuente Benavides. He was a Peruvian poet known for his deep and sometimes mysterious poetry. His work often explored big ideas about life and reality.

Martín Adán showed great writing talent from a young age. He went to the Deutsche Schule Alexander von Humboldt in Lima. He also studied at the National University of San Marcos and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. In his later years, he spent time in special care facilities until he passed away in 1985.

The American poet Allen Ginsberg, from the Beat Generation, was very interested in Martín Adán's work. When Ginsberg visited Peru, he made sure to interview Martín Adán.

His Writings

Martín Adán's first book was a novel called La casa de cartón (The Cardboard House). He published it in 1928 when he was just 20 years old. This book was written in a new and exciting style for its time. It showed the experiences and thoughts of a young person. The novel is famous for describing the Barranco area of Lima. The Cardboard House was quite innovative and helped set the stage for later important Latin American novels.

Most of Martín Adán's other writings were poetry. His poems are known for their deep thoughts about life, what is eternal, and what is real. He often used many symbols and hidden meanings in his poetry, like the rose. He mixed new ways of using language with older poetry styles, such as the sonnet. Themes like reality and identity were also very common in his poems.

Through his poetry, Adán aimed for a "creación total" (total creation). He called this "la poesía absoluta" (absolute poetry). He believed that a poet could have a powerful, almost divine, ability to create new realities with words.
