Martín Almagro Basch (born 11 April 1911 – died 24 August 1984) was a Spanish expert who studied ancient times. He was an archaeologist, a historian, and a writer. He was also a soldier during the Spanish civil war.

Martín Almagro Basch was an expert in archaeology. He studied everything from ancient rock art to classic Roman and Greek history. He taught ancient human history at the Universities of Madrid and Barcelona. From 1968 to 1981, he was the director of the National Archaeology Museum in Madrid.

He led the first Spanish archaeology trip to Egypt. He helped move and save several ancient Egyptian temples. Because of his help, the country of Egypt gave Spain the Debod temple, which you can now see in Madrid.

Life and Career

Martín Almagro Basch was born in a town called Tramacastilla. As a child, he went to school in Albarracín. Later, he studied at the University of Valencia and the Central University of Madrid. He earned his doctor's degree there and learned from a famous expert named Hugo Obermaier. In 1930, he traveled to Germany to finish his studies.

In 1936, Martín Almagro Basch was a soldier in the Spanish Civil War.

After the war, in 1939, Martín Almagro Basch became the director of the Museum of Archaeology in Barcelona. In 1940, he became a professor of Ancient History of Spain at the University of Santiago. By 1943, he was a professor of Prehistory at the University of Barcelona.
