Marpesia was a powerful queen of the Amazons in ancient Greek and Roman stories. The Amazons were a group of fierce women warriors. Marpesia ruled alongside her sister, Lampedo, after another queen named Lysippe passed away. Her name, Marpesia, means "Snatcher" in Greek. Sometimes, her name is spelled incorrectly as Marthesia.

Marpesia was an important leader among the Amazons. She ruled with her sister Lampedo, whose name means "burning torch." They also ruled with another Amazon named Hippo, which means "horse." These queens took over after the death of Queen Lysippe.
Marpesia's Achievements
Marpesia helped to establish the famous Greek city of Ephesus. This city was very important in ancient times. She also founded a city in the Caucasus Mountains. This place was known as the Rock of Marpesia or the Marpesian Cliff. Much later, Alexander the Great built gates there called the Caspian Gates. This area was near the Thermodon River in a region called Cappadocia.
Marpesia and Lampedo made the Amazon kingdom very strong. They expanded their influence into Europe and a large part of Asia Minor. Because of their strength, they became well-known and respected in that part of the world.
Her Legacy
Marpesia's rule ended when she was killed in a sudden attack by invaders from Asia. After her death, her daughters became the new queens. Her daughters were Orithyia and Antiope. Some old stories also mention another daughter named Synope.
Marpesia's story is remembered in history. A famous writer named Giovanni Boccaccio wrote about her and Lampedo in his book Famous Women.
