Martha Darley Mutrie (born August 26, 1824 – died December 30, 1885) was a talented British painter. She was famous for her beautiful paintings of fruit and flowers. Martha grew up in Manchester, England. She studied art at the Manchester School of Design.

Martha Mutrie's artworks were shown in important places. These included the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Manchester Institution. Her paintings were also displayed at other art shows around the world. Today, you can find her works in famous collections. These include the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum.

Her Early Life

Martha Mutrie was born in Ardwick, England, on August 26, 1824. She was the oldest daughter of Robert Mutrie. Her father was a cotton trader from Rothesay, Bute, Scotland. Martha had one younger sister named Annie Feray Mutrie. Annie was born in Manchester on March 6, 1826.

Martha's family soon made their home in Manchester. Later, in 1854, Martha Mutrie moved to London. She passed away in Kensington, England, on December 30, 1885. Her sister, Annie, died a few years later, on September 28, 1893, in Brighton.

Learning to Paint

Martha Mutrie studied art at the Manchester School of Design. She attended from 1844 to 1846. Her teacher there was George Wallis. After her time at the school, she continued to learn from Wallis. She took lessons at his private art academy.

Martha worked hard to improve her painting skills. She focused on capturing the beauty of nature. Her favorite subjects were colorful flowers and delicious fruits.

Showing Her Art

Martha Mutrie's paintings were shown in many important art exhibitions. She displayed her work at the Royal Academy of Arts. She also showed paintings at the Royal Manchester Institution. Her art was seen in other English and international shows.

In 1853, her painting called Fruit was shown at the Royal Academy. The next year, in 1854, her work Spring Flowers was also displayed there. A famous art critic named John Ruskin admired her paintings. He especially liked Primulas and Geraniums at the 1856 exhibition. He even wrote about them in his art notes.
