Martha Medeiros grew up in Porto Alegre. Her parents were José Bernardo Barreto de Medeiros and Isabella Matos de Medeiros. She went to college at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). In 1982, she finished her studies and became a journalist. She started working for the newspapers Zero Hora in Porto Alegre and O Globo in Rio de Janeiro.

Martha lived in Chile for nine months. During this time, she started writing poems. When she came back to Porto Alegre, she kept working as a journalist. But she also continued to write her own stories and poems. This helped her become the well-known writer she is today.

One of Martha Medeiros's most famous poems is called A Morte Devagar. This means "A Slow Death" in English. She wrote it in the year 2000. For a long time, many people mistakenly thought this poem was written by a different famous poet, Pablo Neruda.
