Martha Schneider-Bürger was a German civil engineer. She was born on October 21, 1903, in Sterkrade, a town near Oberhausen. She passed away on September 25, 2001, in Gelnhausen. Martha is famous for being one of the first women to become a civil engineer in Germany.

Her Early Life and School
Martha Schneider-Bürger was the oldest of four daughters. Her father, Hugo Bürger, was also an engineer. After finishing high school in 1923, Martha decided to study engineering.
She started her studies in structural engineering at the Technische Hochschule Karlsruhe. This school is now known as the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. In 1925, she moved to the Technische Hochschule Munich. This school later became the Technical University of Munich.
In 1927, Martha made history. She became the very first German woman to graduate as a civil engineer. This was a big achievement for women in science and engineering.
Her Career as an Engineer
Martha Schneider-Bürger started her work in an engineering office in Düsseldorf. In 1929, she joined a special group. This group was called the Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl. It gave advice on how to use steel in building. She worked there for ten years.
Martha married Max Schneider. After her two children were born, she kept working for the steel association. She worked as a freelancer, which means she worked on projects without being a full-time employee.
In 1930, Martha joined the Association of German Engineers. She was part of many important groups there. One group was called Women in the Engineering Profession. She also helped the German Institute for Standardisation. She worked on making rules for building with steel.
Martha Schneider-Bürger is best known for her special tables. These tables showed different types of steel sections. Engineers used these tables for many years. Her book, Stahlbau-Profile, was published 23 times!
How She Is Remembered
In 2011, a special place was named after her. A square in Oberhausen-Sterkrade now carries her name. This honors her important work and achievements.
