Martim Mércio da Silveira (born March 2, 1911 – died May 26, 1972) was a famous Brazilian football player. In Argentina, people knew him as Martín Mercío Silveyra. He was a midfielder, which means he played in the middle of the field.
Martim Silveira played for the Brazilian national team in two big tournaments. He was part of the team at the 1934 World Cup and the 1938 World Cup. In 1938, his team finished in third place, which was a great achievement!
Early Career and Club Success
Martim started his football journey in 1929. His first club was Guarany FC in Bagé, a city in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Later in 1929, he moved to Rio de Janeiro. There, he joined Botafogo FC, a very well-known club. He quickly helped Botafogo win the Rio Championship in his first year. They won it again in 1932.
Playing in Argentina
In 1933, Martim had a special experience. He went to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to play for CA Boca Juniors. He was the very first Brazilian player in the history of that famous Argentine club. He played there from February to December of that year.
Return to Botafogo
After his time in Argentina, Martim came back to Botafogo. He continued to be a key player for them. He helped Botafogo win two more city championships in 1934 and 1935. At that time, football in Rio was split into amateur and professional leagues. Martim played in the amateur league. He stayed with Botafogo until he finished his playing career in 1940.
Later Life
Martim Mércio da Silveira passed away on May 26, 1972. He was buried on May 27, 1972, at the Cemitério de São João Batista in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
