The history of Martin's Additions began in 1896. A man named Harry M. Martin started buying land from the Chevy Chase Land Company. He named his new land "Martin's Additions to Chevy Chase."

In 1916, the area became a special tax district. This meant it could collect its own taxes for local services. It was called Martin's First, Second, Third and Fourth Additions to the Village of Chevy Chase.

After getting approval from Montgomery County and the state of Maryland, the area officially became the Village of Martin's Additions on March 19, 1985.

Past Property Rules

Before the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was passed, some areas had rules about who could own property. In Martin's Additions, there were once rules that prevented certain groups of people, like African Americans, from owning property in the area. For example, a document from 1905 for a property owned by Harry M. Martin stated that it "cannot be rented, sold, leased or otherwise placed in possession of a colored man or one of the African race." These types of rules are no longer allowed.
