Martin Silva (born September 4, 1952) is a Portuguese-born Canadian radio personality and former politician. He is known for his work on radio and for serving on the Toronto City Council in Toronto, Ontario.

Early Life and Radio Career

Martin Silva was born in Sever do Vouga, a town in Portugal, on September 4, 1952. In August 1968, when he was about 16 years old, he moved to Canada.

He quickly became popular in the Portuguese community in Canada. He worked as a radio announcer at CHIN Radio. In 1973, he hosted a Portuguese-language morning show called Ecos de Portugal. Later, in 1982, he hosted another show called Wake Up Portuguese Style.

Becoming a City Councillor

In 1988, Martin Silva was elected to the Toronto City Council. A city council is a group of people who help make decisions about how a city is run. He represented Ward 4, which is a specific area of Toronto.

He was a member of the New Democratic Party, which is a political group in Canada. Voters chose him again in 1991 and 1994 to continue serving on the council.

In 1995, he ran to become a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Ontario. An MPP helps make laws for the province. However, he was not elected in that provincial election.

In the 1997 city election, Martin Silva ran again for city council. This time, he did not win. There was some confusion because another candidate had the same last name, Mario Silva.

Life After Council

After leaving city council, Martin Silva worked as a union representative. A union is a group that helps workers with their rights and working conditions. He worked for the Hotel Employees, Restaurant Employees Union (HERE).

In late 2001, he returned to CHIN Radio. On February 1, 2006, the Toronto City Council asked him to fill a vacant spot in Ward 20. This spot became open when Olivia Chow decided to run for a different political role.

Martin Silva served as a city councillor again until the municipal election in November 2006. He had agreed not to run as a candidate in that election.

He has always loved working in radio. Today, he continues to work at CHIN Radio as an Account Executive. This means he helps businesses with their advertising on the radio station.
