Martis (which is also called Martis or Maltis in the local Sardinian language) is a small town in Italy. It's located on the beautiful island of Sardinia, which is part of Italy. Martis is about 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia. It's also about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east of Sassari, another important city on the island.
As of December 2004, Martis had a population of 608 people. The town covers an area of about 22.9 square kilometers (8.8 square miles). Martis shares its borders with a few other towns. These include Chiaramonti, Laerru, Nulvi, and Perfugas.
What is a Comune?
In Italy, a comune is like a local government area or a municipality. Think of it as a town or city, along with the land around it, that has its own local administration. Each comune has a mayor and a council that make decisions for the people living there. Martis is one of these many comuni in Italy.
Population Changes Over Time
The number of people living in Martis has changed quite a bit over the years. This is called demographic evolution. Looking at records, we can see how the population grew and shrank at different times.
For example, in 1861, there were 922 people in Martis. The population grew over time, reaching its highest point in 1911 with 1,285 residents. After that, the numbers started to go down. By 2001, the population was 630 people. This kind of change can happen for many reasons, like people moving to bigger cities for work or families having fewer children.
