About the House and Its History
The Mary Baker Eddy House is in a part of Lynn called the Diamond district. This area has many nice homes built in the 1800s. The house is on the south side of Broad Street. You can find it between Portland and Atlantic Streets.
It is a two-and-a-half-story house made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down to the front. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboard. The roof edges and gables have decorative supports. These are called Italianate brackets. The windows also have fancy tops with similar brackets.
The house was built around 1870 or 1871. It might have been built by the same person who built a house nearby. This is because they share some similar design features.
Mary Baker Eddy's Time in the House
Mary Glover bought the house in 1875. She later married Asa Gilbert Eddy in 1877. She lived in this house when her important book was published. The book was called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. It came out in 1875.
In 1882, Mary and Asa Eddy moved to Boston. They first rented out this house, then later sold it. The local Christian Science church bought the house in 1902. In 1916, it was given to the Mother Church. Since 1906, the house has been a place for visitors to learn about the church's history.
