The Mary Baker Eddy House is a special old house located at 8 Broad Street in Lynn, Massachusetts. It was built a long time ago, between 1870 and 1871. This house was once the home of Mary Baker Eddy, who lived there from 1875 to 1882. Mary Baker Eddy was the person who started the Church of Christ, Scientist.
Today, the church owns this house. They keep it as a museum to teach people about Mary Baker Eddy's life and the early days of her church. Because of its importance, the house was named a National Historic Landmark in 2021. It also became part of the Diamond Historic District in 1996.
About the House
The Mary Baker Eddy House is in a part of Lynn called the Diamond district. This area has many beautiful old homes from the 1800s. The house is on the south side of Broad Street, which is also US Route 1A. It sits between Portland and Atlantic Streets.
The house is a 2+1⁄2-story building made of wood. It has a roof with a front-facing gable, which means the triangular part of the roof faces the street. The outside is covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards. You can see decorative brackets under the roof edges and above the windows. These decorations are part of a style called Italianate.
History of the House
This house was built between 1870 and 1871. It might have been built by the same person who built another house nearby, as they share similar designs. In 1875, Mary Glover bought the house. She later married Asa Gilbert Eddy in 1877.
Mary Baker Eddy was living in this house when her very important book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was first published in 1875. This book explains the ideas behind Christian Science. In 1882, the Eddys moved to Boston. They first rented out this house and then sold it.
The local Christian Science church bought the house in 1902. In 1916, it was given to the Mother Church, which is the main church. Since 1906, the house has been used as a place for visitors to learn about Mary Baker Eddy and the history of the church.
