Mary M. Glackin is an American scientist who has worked a lot with weather and climate. She was the president of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in 2020. This society is a group for people who study weather and climate.

Mary Glackin's Career

Mary Glackin had a very important job at The Weather Company. This company is part of IBM and helps people get weather forecasts. She was in charge of science and how forecasts were made.

Before that, she worked for a long time at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA is a U.S. government agency that studies the ocean, atmosphere, and climate. She worked there for 34 years!

Her Work at NOAA

At NOAA, Mary Glackin had many different roles. She helped lead the organization. She also worked with the National Weather Service. This service gives us daily weather forecasts and warnings. In 2007, she was the acting director of the National Weather Service for a short time. She also worked on the U.S. Global Change Research Program. This program studies how the Earth's climate is changing. She retired from NOAA in 2012.

Her Education

Mary Glackin went to the University of Maryland. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1984. Her main subject was computer science. She also focused on atmospheric science, which is the study of Earth's atmosphere and weather.

Awards and Honors

Mary Glackin has received many awards for her work. She is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). This means she is a highly respected member of the society. In 2004, she won the Charles Franklin Brooks Award. This award is given for great service to the AMS.

She also received the U.S. Presidential Rank Award twice. This is a special award for government leaders who do excellent work. She also earned the Silver and Bronze Medals from the Department of Commerce. These medals recognize outstanding achievements. She is also a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.
