Mary Kirkwood (born December 21, 1904 – died June 17, 1995) was an American artist. She was also a professor at the University of Idaho for 40 years. She taught there from 1930 until she retired in 1970.

Mary Kirkwood studied art at several universities. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana. Later, she received a master of fine arts degree from the University of Oregon. She also studied art in other countries. She attended the Royal Art School in Stockholm, Sweden. She also studied at the College of Art Study Abroad in Paris.

Kirkwood is known for bringing new ideas to her students. She taught them about modern art techniques and concepts. Her artwork can be seen in the collections of the University of Idaho and the Portland Art Museum.

Early Life and Education

Mary Kirkwood was born in Hillsboro, Oregon, on December 21, 1904. Her family moved around quite a bit when she was young. They lived in places like Syracuse, New York, and Mexico. They also lived in Tucson, Arizona.

When Mary was four years old, her family settled in Missoula, Montana. She stayed in Missoula and graduated from the University of Montana in 1926. Four years later, in 1930, she earned her master's degree in fine arts. This degree was from the University of Oregon.

Artistic Impact and Legacy

Mary Kirkwood had a big impact through her art and teaching. Many of her commissioned portraits hang at the University of Idaho. These paintings show important people or scenes.

One of her paintings, titled Kate, was created in 1980. This artwork is part of the collections at the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon. Another important piece is a 1930 painting of Adam and Eve. This painting is kept in the archives of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. It was part of her master's degree work at the University of Oregon.

To honor her contributions, there is a scholarship named after her. The Mary Kirkwood scholarship helps students at the University of Idaho.
