Mary Paulet, Marchioness of Winchester facts for kids
Mary Paulet, Marchioness of Winchester, was an important woman in 17th-century England. She was known as the second wife of Charles Paulet, who later became the 1st Duke of Bolton. Mary was the daughter of Emanuel Scrope, the 1st Earl of Sunderland, and Martha Jeanes. Even though some people called her the "Duchess of Bolton," she passed away before her husband received the title of Duke. Her son, also named Charles Paulet, later became the 2nd Duke of Bolton.
Mary's First Marriage
Mary Paulet first married Henry Carey, Lord Leppington, around the year 1646. Henry Carey was a supporter of the King during the English Civil War, known as a Royalist. He was the son of Henry Carey, the 2nd Earl of Monmouth. Sadly, Lord Leppington died in 1649, and Mary and he did not have any children together.
Marriage to Charles Paulet
On February 12, 1655, Mary married Charles Paulet. Their wedding took place at a church called St. Dionis Backchurch in London. This marriage was very important because it helped Charles Paulet gain control of the large Bolton estates in North Yorkshire. These estates were a significant part of his family's wealth and power.
Mary's Children
Mary and Charles Paulet had four children together:
- Jane Paulet (born around 1656 – died May 23, 1716). She married John Egerton, 3rd Earl of Bridgwater on April 2, 1673.
- Mary Paulet (her birth and death dates are not widely known).
- Charles Paulet, 2nd Duke of Bolton (born 1661 – died 1722). He later became the 2nd Duke of Bolton, inheriting his father's title.
- William Paulet (born 1666 – died 1729).
Later Life and Burial
Mary Paulet passed away on November 1, 1680. She died in a town called Moulins, Allier in France. Her body was brought back to England and buried in Wensley, Yorkshire.
