Charles Paulet, 2nd Duke of Bolton KG PC (born in 1661 – died on January 21, 1722), was an important English nobleman and politician. He held many significant positions during his lifetime. He was the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, which meant he represented the King or Queen in Ireland. He also served as a Member of Parliament for Hampshire. Charles Paulet was a strong supporter of King William III of Orange.

Life of Charles Paulet
Charles Paulet was born in 1661. His father was Charles Paulet, 1st Duke of Bolton. His mother was Mary Scrope.
Early Titles and Roles
When his father became the Marquess of Winchester in 1675, Charles was known as the Earl of Wiltshire. Later, from 1689, he was called the Marquess of Winchester. He received the title of Duke of Bolton in 1699, after his father passed away.
Charles Paulet held many important jobs for the country. He was a Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and Dorset. A Lord Lieutenant was the King's or Queen's representative in a county.
He also helped arrange the union of England and Scotland. This was a very important event that created Great Britain. He was also a "lord justice of the kingdom" twice. This meant he helped govern the country when the monarch was away.
Other key roles included being the Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household. This person managed the royal family's homes and staff. He was also the Governor of the Isle of Wight, which is an island off the south coast of England.
Family Life
Charles Paulet was married three times during his life. He had children from his second and third marriages.
First Marriage
His first marriage was on July 10, 1679, to Margaret Coventry. Margaret was the daughter of George Coventry, 3rd Baron Coventry. This marriage did not result in any children. Margaret passed away in 1681 or 1682.
Second Marriage and Children
Charles married Frances Ramsden on February 8, 1682 or 1683. Frances was the daughter of William Ramsden. They had five children together:
- Lady Frances Powlett (born 1684 – died 1715). She married John Mordaunt, Viscount Mordaunt.
- Charles Powlett, 3rd Duke of Bolton (born 1685 – died 1754). He became the next Duke of Bolton.
- Lady Betty Charlotte (born 1686).
- Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton (born 1691 – died 1759). He also became a Duke later.
- Lady Mary Powlett.
Frances Ramsden passed away in 1696.
Third Marriage and Child
Around 1697, Charles married Henrietta Crofts. Henrietta was the daughter of James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. They had one son:
- Lord Nassau Powlett (died 1741). He married Isabella Tufton.
