Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A Lord Lieutenant is a special person chosen by the King or Queen to represent them in a county. They are like the monarch's main helper and representative in that area.

In Hampshire, these important people have been serving since 1551. From 1688 onwards, all the Lords Lieutenant also had another important job: they were the Custos Rotulorum of Hampshire. This old Latin name means "keeper of the rolls," and it meant they were in charge of keeping important county records and maintaining peace and order.

For a long time, from 1889 until 1959, the area we now call Hampshire was officially known as the County of Southampton.

Deputy Lieutenants of Hampshire

A deputy lieutenant of Hampshire is someone who helps the Lord Lieutenant. They are chosen by the Lord Lieutenant themselves. There can be many deputy lieutenants at one time, depending on how many people live in the county. Their job doesn't end when a new Lord Lieutenant takes over. However, they usually retire when they turn 75.
