George Carey, 2nd Baron Hunsdon (1547 – 9 September 1603) was an important English nobleman during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. He was the oldest son of Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, who was a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth I. This made George closely connected to the royal family. When he was 13 years old, in 1560, George started studying at Trinity College, Cambridge.

George Carey's Early Life and Career
George Carey began his public life at a young age. In December 1566, he went on an important trip to Scotland. He joined the Earl of Bedford to attend the baptism of the future King James VI. During this visit, Mary, Queen of Scots gave him a special ring and a necklace with her small portrait.
Military Service and Knighthood
George showed great bravery during the Northern Rebellion in 1569. For his courage, he was knighted on the battlefield by Thomas Radcliffe, the 3rd Earl of Sussex. This was a big honor, showing he was a true knight.
Serving in Parliament
George Carey also served as a Member of Parliament. This meant he helped make laws for England. He represented different areas, including Hertfordshire in 1571 and Hampshire in 1584, 1586, 1589, and 1593.
Important Roles and Responsibilities
In 1578, George was given the title of Knight Marshal. This role involved keeping order and ensuring security, especially around the royal court. He was also given control over certain lands in Cornwall by the Queen.
Later, George was sent to Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight. He became the Governor of the Isle, meaning he was in charge of its defenses and management. He played a key role in protecting the island during the threat of the Spanish Armada.
In July 1596, George's father passed away. George then became the second Baron Hunsdon. The next year, he was given a very important job: Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household. This was a high-ranking position, and his father had held it before him.
George Carey and the Theatre
Both George Carey and his father were big supporters of the arts, especially theatre. They were patrons of a famous theatre group in London called "the Lord Chamberlain's Men". This company included very talented people like William Shakespeare, who wrote many famous plays, and Richard Burbage, a well-known actor.
In 1597, George was made a Knight of the Garter. This is a very special award given by the monarch. Some people believe that one of William Shakespeare's plays, Merry Wives of Windsor, was first performed to celebrate this important occasion.

George Carey married Elizabeth Spencer. She was related to the famous poet Edmund Spenser. Like her husband, Elizabeth was also a patron of the arts, supporting artists and writers. George and Elizabeth had one daughter named Elizabeth.
