John Carey's Life and Work

Early Career and Roles

John Carey held many important positions in the royal court and government. From 1573 to 1603, he was a Gentleman pensioner. This role involved guarding the monarch. In 1585, he became the Chamberlain of Berwick-upon-Tweed. He also served as the Deputy Warden of East March.

He was a Justice of the Peace for Cambridgeshire in 1594. From 1596 to 1598, and again in 1603, he was the Marshal of Berwick-upon-Tweed. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Buckingham. He served in this role in 1584, 1589, and 1593.

Governor of Berwick

As Governor of Berwick, John Carey was responsible for the town's safety. Berwick was a crucial town near the border with Scotland. He often wrote letters about events in the area. For example, he wrote about the arrest of Jacob Kroger. Kroger was a goldsmith who worked for Anne of Denmark, the Queen of Scotland.

In January 1595, Lord Home invited Carey to meet James VI of Scotland at Dunglass Castle. However, Carey chose not to make the trip. In April, Carey wrote that King James VI and Queen Anne planned to visit areas near Berwick. This included a visit to Halidon Hill, which overlooked the town. Carey wondered if the town should fire a cannon salute for their visit.

Changes After 1603

In June 1603, the crowns of England and Scotland were united. This event is known as the Union of the Crowns. John Carey heard rumors that the Berwick army might be reduced. He also heard that Lord Home might become the new governor. Carey wrote to Robert Cecil about his concerns. He felt someone important should be in charge of Berwick. He noted that many people in the town were feeling upset and unhappy.

John Carey passed away in 1617 at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire. His son, Henry Carey, 1st Earl of Dover, took over his title.
