Charles Paulet's Political Career
Charles Paulet became the sixth Marquess of Winchester in 1675, after his father passed away. Before this, he was known as Lord St John. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Winchester in 1660. Later, he was an MP for Hampshire from 1661 until 1675.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Charles Paulet held many important jobs throughout his life. These roles showed his influence and power in England.
- Justice of the Peace: He helped keep law and order in several counties.
- Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire: This meant he was the King's main representative in Hampshire. He held this role twice, from 1667–1676 and again from 1689–1699.
- Warden of the New Forest: He was in charge of the New Forest, a large royal hunting ground.
- Custos Rotulorum of Hampshire: This role meant he was the chief keeper of the county's records.

Becoming the Duke of Bolton
In 1688, Charles Paulet strongly supported William and Mary when they became King and Queen of England. Because of his loyalty, he was given back his position on the Privy Council. On 9 April 1689, he was given the special title of Duke of Bolton. This made him one of the highest-ranking nobles in the country. He also built Bolton Hall, North Yorkshire in 1678.
Charles Paulet's Personality
Charles Paulet was known for being quite an unusual person. He was often described as eccentric. For example, in 1687, it was said that he traveled with four carriages and 100 horsemen. He would sleep during the day and host parties at night.
He was also known for his strong opinions. He did not get along with some important figures of his time, like Lord Halifax and later the Duke of Marlborough.
A Public Argument
In 1666, Charles Paulet was involved in a public argument at Westminster Hall. He had a dispute with Sir Andrew Henley, 1st Baronet. The argument happened right in front of the Court of Common Pleas. Both men later received a royal pardon. Charles Paulet admitted he started the argument because he was "in a passion." Despite this, his friendly nature helped him make many friends.
