Mary Swartz Rose (born October 31, 1874 – died February 1, 1941) was an American scientist and teacher. She worked in the important fields of nutrition and dietetics. This means she studied how food affects our bodies and how to plan healthy meals.

Growing Up and School

Mary Swartz Rose was born in Newark, Ohio. She was the oldest of five children. Her parents were Hiram Schwartz and Martha Jane Davies.

Mary was a very bright student. She finished high school in 1892. She was the top student in her class. In 1901, she graduated from Denison University. She studied Liberal Arts there.

Later, in 1906, she earned another degree. This was a Bachelor of Science in Household Arts. She got it from Teachers College, Columbia University. She then went to Yale University. There, she earned her PhD in 1909. She studied Physiological Chemistry at Yale.

Her Work in Nutrition

After finishing her studies at Yale, Mary Swartz Rose started working. She joined the faculty at Columbia University Teachers College. She worked there for the rest of her life.

Mary Rose and Henry Sherman created something new. They started the very first program in nutrition in the United States. This program was at Columbia University.

From 1910 to 1923, she was a Professor of Household Arts. After 1923, she became a Professor of Nutrition. Mary Rose was well-known as both a teacher and a scientist. She wrote many books and articles. Some were for other scientists. Others were for everyday people. These explained how science could help them choose and prepare healthy food.

During World War I, Mary Rose helped the country. She worked with Herbert Hoover. She created scientific recipes and balanced meals for soldiers. She also helped develop Army rations. These were the food supplies given to soldiers.

Awards and Special Recognition

Mary Swartz Rose helped start the American Institute of Nutrition. She was also its fifth president. She was the first woman to hold this important role.

She was part of the Council on Foods and Nutrition of the AMA. She also served on the Nutrition Commission. This was part of the health organization of the League of Nations.

Many groups honored her work. The Greater New York Dietetic Association created a special annual lecture in her name. The American Dietetic Association also named a fellowship after her. A fellowship helps support a student's studies.

Today, two awards are given in her name. These are from the American Society for Nutrition. They honor research on how safe and effective certain food compounds are for health. Columbia University Teachers College also named a professorship in her honor.

Her Family Life

In 1910, Mary married Anton Rose. He was also a chemist whom she met at Yale. Anton later earned his PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University. He worked for the Prudential insurance company.

Mary and Anton had one son, born in 1915. Mary Swartz Rose passed away from cancer on February 1, 1941. She died in Edgewater, New Jersey. She was buried in Granville, Ohio.

Mary had an interesting hobby. She liked to create crossword puzzles. The clues in her puzzles were all about amino acids. These are the building blocks of protein.
