Mary Westbrook Van Deusen's Life and Work
Mary Amanda Westbrook was born in Fishkill, New York. Her father, Cornelius de Puy Westbrook, was a pastor. Her mother was Sarah (Beekman) Westbrook.
In 1865, she married James Lansing Van Deusen. He was from Rondout, New York.
Becoming a Published Author
Mary Westbrook Van Deusen published many of her stories and poems. Most of her books came out through the Freeman Company. This company was located in Kingston, New York.
Her most famous book was Rachel Du Mont: A Brave Little Maid of the Revolution. It was published in 1883. This novel told a story about the burning of Kingston. This event happened during the American Revolution.
