Mary Wineberg (born January 3, 1980) is an American track and field athlete. She is best known for winning a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She was part of the winning 4x400 metre relay team. Mary was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Early Life and Education
Mary Wineberg, whose maiden name was Danner, was born on January 3, 1980. She grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mary went to Walnut Hills High School. After high school, she attended the University of Cincinnati. She received a scholarship to run track there. In 2002, she graduated with a degree in education.
Olympic Gold Medalist
Mary Wineberg was an Olympic athlete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed in the 400-meter race. She finished fifth in her semifinal race. This meant she did not qualify for the final.
However, Mary had another chance to compete. She ran the first part of the race for the U.S. Women's 4 × 400 metres relay team. Her team worked together and won the gold medal at the Games! This was a very special moment. Mary became the first African American female athlete from the University of Cincinnati to win an Olympic gold medal.
Life After Running
Mary Wineberg retired from professional running in 2013. She had been sponsored by big sports companies like Nike. Her husband, Chris Wineberg, was also her training partner.
Today, Mary lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her family. She works as an educator, helping young people learn. She has written two books: "Unwavering Perseverance: An Olympic Gold Medalist Finds Peace" and a children's book called "I Didn't Win."
