Delicious Maryland Cookies with chocolate chips

Maryland Cookies are a very popular type of cookie made by the Burton's Biscuit Company in the United Kingdom. These tasty treats are known for their delicious chocolate chips!

A Sweet History

Maryland Cookies have a long and interesting past. They were first created way back in 1956. A company called Lyons started making them. They were produced in a town called Blackpool through a part of Lyons called Symbol Biscuits.

Over the years, Maryland Cookies changed hands a few times. In 1994, Lyons Biscuits was sold to a company called Hillsdown Holdings. Then, in 1999, another company, Hicks Muse Tate & Furst, bought Hillsdown Holdings.

Hicks Muse Tate & Furst decided to create a new company just for biscuits, called Horizon Biscuit Company. In 2000, they bought Burton's Foods and combined it with Horizon. This is how Maryland Cookies became part of the Burton's brand.

More recently, in 2021, the famous Ferrero Group bought Burton's. Ferrero makes many well-known sweets, like Nutella and Kinder Surprise. So, Maryland Cookies are now part of a big global family of treats!

What's Inside the Pack?

A regular box of Maryland Cookies is usually about 22.5 cm long, 5.5 cm wide, and 6.0 cm tall. The cookies inside are kept fresh in a special plastic wrapper called cellophane. On the packaging, you'll often see the words "The Nation's Favourite Cookie," showing just how much people love them!

What Makes Them Special?

Today, Maryland Cookies are one of the most loved cookies in the UK. People buy a lot of them! More than 12 billion Maryland Cookies are sold across Europe every single year. That's a huge number of cookies!

The special recipe for Maryland Cookies is a lot like a chocolate chip shortbread. This gives them a unique and yummy texture that many people enjoy. They are a favorite snack for many families.
