Burton's Biscuit Company is a famous British company that makes lots of delicious biscuits! It's actually the second-biggest biscuit maker in the UK. The company was formed in October 2000 when two companies, Burton's Gold Medal Biscuits and Horizon Biscuit Company, joined together. In November 2011, they changed their name from Burton's Foods to Burton's Biscuit Company.
Today, Burton's has over 2,200 employees across the UK. They have three main factories in Llantarnam, Edinburgh, and Blackpool. They also have a special factory in Moreton where they make chocolate, and a big storage and shipping center in Liverpool. Their main office is in St Albans. Many of their tasty biscuits are sold all over the world!
The Story of Burton's Biscuits
The very first Burton's biscuits were baked by George Burton, who was born in 1829 in Leek. He started baking in Blackpool. Later, in 1935, George's grandson, Joseph Burton, officially started the Burton's Biscuits company.
For a while, Burton's also made potato crisps and snacks, like Potato Puffs and Fish 'n' Chips. They had a factory in Slough for this until the early 1980s. Guess what? In 2014, they brought back their popular Fish 'n' Chips snacks because so many people wanted them again!
Over the years, Burton's Biscuit Company has had different owners. In 2000, a company called Associated British Foods sold Burton's. Then, in 2007, Duke Street Capital took over. A few years later, in 2009, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Apollo Global Management became the main owners.
In 2013, the company was put up for sale again. That November, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan bought Burton's. This is a big fund that helps pay for teachers' pensions in Canada.
In 2016, Burton's made a deal about Cadbury biscuits. They sold the special license to make Cadbury-branded biscuits to Mondelēz International, who actually own Cadbury. But don't worry, these biscuits are still made in Burton's factories!
Most recently, in June 2021, the company was bought by the Ferrero SpA group, which is famous for chocolates like Nutella and Ferrero Rocher.
