Marylebone West was a special area in London that got to choose its own representative for the UK Parliament. This area was called a 'constituency'. It was located in the Metropolitan Borough of St Marylebone.

This constituency would elect one person, called a Member of Parliament (MP), to sit in the House of Commons. This is where laws are made for the whole country. The MP was chosen using a system called 'first past the post', which means the candidate with the most votes wins.

Marylebone West was created in 1885. Before that, it was part of a larger area called the Marylebone constituency. It stopped being a constituency in 1918.

What Was Marylebone West?

Defining the Area

The area of Marylebone used to be one big constituency. But in 1884–85, it was split into smaller parts. Marylebone West was one of these new parts. Its borders were the same as the local government area called the St Marylebone Vestry.

The area was divided into two main sections. Marylebone West included four specific wards: Bryanston, Hamilton Terrace, New Church Street, and Portman. In 1881, about 83,871 people lived in this area.

How Were MPs Chosen?

Election Results Overview

People in Marylebone West voted in several general elections to choose their MP. These elections happened in 1885, 1886, 1892, 1895, 1900, 1906, and twice in 1910.

In most of these elections, the Conservative Party candidate won. For example, Frederick Seager Hunt was the first MP elected for Marylebone West in 1885. He was a Conservative.

Later, Horace Farquhar won in 1895 as a Liberal Unionist. After he became a Lord, Samuel Scott won a special election in 1898 and continued to be the MP until the constituency was closed.

The elections showed how many people voted for each candidate. The 'turnout' percentage tells us how many people who could vote actually did. This number changed over the years.
