María del Carmen Pérez Díe, born in 1953, is a famous Spanish Egyptologist. An Egyptologist is someone who studies ancient Egypt. She is also a curator, which means she takes care of museum collections. Since 1980, she has been the main curator for Egyptian and Middle Eastern items at the National Archaeological Museum of Spain. She even led the museum as its director from 1991 to 1997.

María del Carmen Pérez Díe is also part of several important groups. These include the International Committee for Egyptology and the Spanish Association of Egyptology. She also helps with the Spanish Committee for saving the ancient city of Tiro.

María del Carmen Pérez Díe was born in 1953 in Madrid, Spain. Her mother was a history professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid. María became interested in ancient Egypt when she was young. Her parents took her to visit the National Archaeological Museum of Spain. This visit sparked her lifelong passion.

Her Journey to Egyptology

After finishing school, María del Carmen Pérez Díe decided to study Egyptology. She also learned about how to run museums. She studied in important cities like Cairo, Egypt, and Paris, France. Later, she continued her studies at the Complutense University of Madrid. In 1990, she earned her highest degree, a doctorate, in Ancient History.

Her special research was about a place called Heracleópolis Magna. This was an ancient city in Egypt. She wrote her main paper, called a thesis, about this site. She had been leading archaeological digs at Heracleópolis since 1984.

Awards and Recognition

María del Carmen Pérez Díe has received many special awards for her work. She won the National Prize from the Spanish Geographical Society. In 2009, she received a medal called the Commendation of Number of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. This award came from the Spanish government. The next year, she received the Gold Medal from the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt. This shows how much Egypt values her work.

From 2011 to 2014, she was also a judge for the Princess of Asturias Awards. These are very important awards given in Spain for achievements in different fields. She helped choose winners in the Social Sciences category.
