Masaaki Yanagishita (柳下 正明), born on January 1, 1960, is a well-known Japanese football player and coach. He played as a strong defender for many years. After his playing career, he became a successful manager for several football clubs in Japan.

Playing Career

Club Football

Masaaki Yanagishita was born in Hamamatsu, Japan. He started his football journey playing as a defender. From 1982 to 1992, he played for a team called Yamaha Motors. This team later became known as Júbilo Iwata. He played in 135 league games for the club before he stopped playing in 1992.

National Team Experience

In 1979, Masaaki Yanagishita was chosen to play for the Japan U-20 national team. He played in the 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship which was held in Japan. He played in 3 games during this important tournament.

Coaching Career

After he stopped playing football, Yanagishita started coaching in 1993. He began his coaching career at Yamaha Motors, which later became Júbilo Iwata.

Early Coaching Days

He mostly worked as an assistant coach until 2002. In 2003, he became the main manager for Júbilo Iwata. Under his leadership, the team finished second in the J1 League. They also won the 2003 Emperor's Cup, which is a big achievement.

Managing Other Teams

In 2004, he moved to J2 League club Consadole Sapporo. He managed them until the end of the 2006 season.

Return to Júbilo and Other Clubs

In 2007, he returned to Júbilo Iwata as an assistant coach. In 2009, he became the manager again. Even though the team had some tough times in the J1 League, they won the 2010 J.League Cup. He left Júbilo at the end of 2011.

In June 2012, he joined Albirex Niigata. The team was struggling, but he helped them improve. He managed Albirex Niigata until the end of the 2015 season. In 2017, he became the manager for Zweigen Kanazawa, another J2 League club. He continued to manage Zweigen Kanazawa until 2023. In 2024, he became an assistant coach for Tochigi SC.
