Masahiro Wada (born January 21, 1965) is a Japanese former football player and manager. He played as a defender and midfielder. His sons, Atsuki Wada and Tomoki Wada, are also football players.

Playing Career Highlights

Masahiro Wada was born in Kobe, Japan, on January 21, 1965. After finishing university, he joined a football club called Matsushita Electric in 1987. This club later became known as Gamba Osaka.

Early Success at Gamba Osaka

Wada quickly became a regular player for Matsushita Electric. He played as a left side back and a left midfielder. In 1990, his team won the Emperor's Cup. This was a very important win, as it was the club's first major championship!

Moving to Vissel Kobe

After 1994, Wada played less often for Gamba Osaka. In July 1995, he moved to Vissel Kobe, a team from his hometown. He played regularly for Vissel Kobe and helped them get promoted to the top league, J1 League, in 1997. However, he didn't play much in 1997 and 1998. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 1998 season.

Coaching and Managerial Career

After he stopped playing, Masahiro Wada stayed with Vissel Kobe as part of their coaching team.

First Time as Vissel Kobe Manager

In 2009, he became the temporary manager for Vissel Kobe. He led the team for five games in the J1 League. After a new manager was hired, Wada went back to being an assistant coach.

On September 12, 2010, Wada was promoted again to be the head coach of Vissel Kobe. He helped the team finish in ninth place in the J1 League. This was the highest rank Vissel Kobe had ever achieved at that time! However, in 2012, he was let go after 8 games. The club had hoped to finish in the top four. He continued to work as an executive staff member for Vissel Kobe until November 2013.

Coaching in Thailand

In 2014, Masahiro Wada became the first foreign head coach for Chonburi F.C. in Thailand. He was invited by Witthaya Hloagune, who was a director at Chonburi and had been his teammate at Matsushita Electric.

Wada had a very successful season in Thailand. His team finished second in the 2014 Thai Premier League and was runner-up in the 2014 Thai FA Cup. He even won the "TPL Coach of the Year" award! Despite his success, he decided to return to Japan.

Back to Japan

In December 2014, Masahiro Wada returned to Japan to manage Kyoto Sanga FC in the J2 League. However, he stepped down from this role on July 10, 2015, because the team was struggling.

Second Time in Thailand

On October 22, 2015, Port F.C. hired Masahiro Wada to help them avoid being moved down to a lower league in the 2015 Thai Premier League. He did a great job, but he couldn't save them from relegation. He stayed on as head coach for the 2016 Thai Division 1 League. However, Port F.C. let him go on July 11, 2016, even though the team was in third place.
