Masanobu Matsunami was born in Gifu, Japan, on November 21, 1974. After finishing high school, he joined the professional football club Gamba Osaka in 1993. He quickly became an important player for the team.
Early Success at Gamba Osaka
On November 20, 1993, just before his 19th birthday, Matsunami made history. He became the youngest player ever to score a hat-trick in the J1 League. A hat-trick means scoring three goals in a single game!
In 1997, he played alongside a famous player named Patrick M'Boma. Matsunami played in all 32 matches that season and scored 13 goals. M'Boma also had a great season, scoring 25 goals and becoming the league's top scorer.
Winning the J1 League
Even though he sometimes played as a substitute in the 2000s, Matsunami still appeared in many matches. In 2005, his team, Gamba Osaka, won the J1 League championship. This was the first time in the club's history that they won the league title! The team also finished second in the 2005 J.League Cup that year. Matsunami retired from playing football at the end of the 2005 season.
Matsunami's Coaching Journey
After he stopped playing, Matsunami began his coaching career at Gamba Osaka in 2006. He mostly coached the youth teams until 2009, helping young players learn the game.
Coaching the Main Team
In 2010, Matsunami became a coach for Gamba Osaka's main team. He worked under the manager Akira Nishino. In 2012, a new manager, José Carlos Serrão, took over. However, the team's results were not good, and Serrão was replaced in March. Matsunami then became the new manager of Gamba Osaka.
Challenges as a Manager
Despite his efforts, Gamba Osaka was relegated to the J2 League at the end of the 2012 season. Even though the team finished second in the 2012 Emperor's Cup, Matsunami resigned as manager at the end of 2012.
In 2014, he moved to another club, Gainare Tottori, which had just been relegated to the J3 League. He managed the team for two seasons, but they were not able to return to the J2 League. He resigned from Gainare Tottori at the end of 2015.
