What's in a Name?
The team's name, Gainare, has a special meaning. It comes from two words:
- Gaina: This is a word from the Tottori area dialect, and it means "great."
- Sperare: This is an Italian word that means "to hope."
So, the name "Gainare" combines "great" and "hope."
The team's mascot used to be a character from a Japanese horror anime called Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro. This character was created by Shigeru Mizuki, who was born in Sakaiminato, Tottori.
Team History
The club started in 1983. Back then, it was called the Tottori Teachers' Soccer Club. In 1989, they allowed players who weren't teachers to join. At that time, they changed their name to S.C. Tottori. The club got its current name, Gainare Tottori, in 2007.
In 2001, they did very well in the Regional League play-off, finishing as runners-up. This helped them get promoted to the Japan Football League. The club is run by a group called Yamatsumi Sports Club, which is a non-profit organization.
A big moment for the team was on October 3, 2010. They won a game against Arte Takasaki 1–0 at their home stadium. This win meant they would finish in the top four of the JFL. On November 29, the J. League officially confirmed that Gainare Tottori would be promoted to J2. They even won the JFL title on October 24, 2010, with five games left in the season!
In 2013, Gainare Tottori played in a special playoff to stay in J2. They lost to Kamatamare Sanuki by a total score of 2–1 over two games. Because of this, they were moved down to the new J3 League for the 2014 season. They played in the J2 League for three seasons. Since then, they have not returned to J2. Gainare Tottori is one of only four teams that have played in the J3 League every year since it began.
Where They Play: Stadiums
Gainare Tottori plays most of its home games at Axis Bird Stadium in Tottori City. This stadium is special because it's the only one in the San'in region that meets the rules for J. League games.
They also play some games at other stadiums, including:
- Fuse Athletic Park Stadium in Tottori City
- Matsue Athletics Stadium in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture
- Hamayama Athletic Park Stadium in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture
