Masherbrum is a huge mountain in the Karakoram range in Pakistan. It stands at 7,821 metres (25,659 ft) tall, which makes it one of the highest mountains in the world. It was once known as K1, and it is the 22nd highest mountain on Earth.

Where is Masherbrum?
Masherbrum is located in the Ghanche District of Gilgit-Baltistan, a northern region of Pakistan. It is part of the Karakoram mountain range, which is known for having some of the tallest peaks in the world. This area is very rugged and beautiful, with many glaciers and high valleys.
How Tall is Masherbrum?
Masherbrum reaches an amazing height of 7,821 meters (25,659 feet) above sea level. Mountains over 7,000 meters (about 23,000 feet) are often called "seven-thousanders." Masherbrum is one of these giants. Its impressive height makes it a challenging climb for even the most experienced mountaineers.
The First Climb
The first people to successfully reach the very top of Masherbrum were George Irving Bell and Willi Unsoeld. They were part of an American expedition. Their amazing climb happened in 1960. Reaching the summit of such a high and difficult mountain was a huge achievement for them and for mountaineering history.
Why is it Called K1?
The name "K1" was given to Masherbrum by Thomas Montgomerie in 1856. He was a British explorer who was surveying the Karakoram mountains. He labeled the peaks he saw with "K" for Karakoram, followed by a number. Masherbrum was the first peak he labeled, so it became K1. Later, it was given its local name, Masherbrum.
