Masku is a small town, also called a municipality, in Finland. It's located in the southwestern part of the country, not too far from the city of Turku. Masku is known for its beautiful nature and rich history. As of 31 December 2023, about 9,619 people live there. The total area of Masku is about 204.01 square kilometres (78.77 sq mi), with 29.21 km2 (11.28 sq mi) of that being water. The official language spoken in Masku is Finnish.
The name "Masko" was once used in Swedish, but it is no longer official.
In 2009, two nearby municipalities, Askainen and Lemu, joined with Masku. This made Masku a larger municipality.
A Look into Masku's Past
Masku is one of the oldest areas in Finland where people gathered for religious services, known as a parish. It was set up way back in the 1200s. For a while, another area called Merimasku was part of Masku until 1577, when it became part of Naantali.
People from Masku also used to have special hunting areas in the Turku islands. You can still see this in place names like Maskinnamo in Korpo. There are even villages named Maskulainen in Rymättylä and Lemu. This suggests that the first people who settled in those villages might have come from Masku.
When Lemu and Askainen joined Masku in 2009, Masku started using Askainen's coat of arms.
