The Massawomeck tribe was a group of Iroquois Native Americans. They lived mainly in what is now Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Who Were the Massawomeck?
The Massawomeck people were very active and moved around a lot. Their lands stretched from Lake Erie all the way to the eastern part of West Virginia today.
They lived in many villages, some of which were protected by tall fences called palisades. Some villages were quite large, with many longhouses. The Massawomeck also used canoes on Lake Erie for travel and trade.
A Powerful Native American Group
The Massawomeck were known as a strong and important tribe. They lived in the lands between Lake Erie and the Chesapeake Bay. Other tribes, like the Manahoac and Powhatan, knew of their strength.
The Massawomeck played a key role in trade. They helped control how European goods moved into the inland areas. This made them very influential in the region.
Changes and New Paths
Over time, the Massawomeck faced challenges. In 1606, the Seneca tribe had conflicts with the Massawomeck near Lake Erie. These interactions continued for many years.
By 1634, the Massawomeck experienced significant changes to their way of life. Some of their people moved to the southern parts of their lands. Others joined the Susquehannock tribe and became known as the "Black Minqua."
Eventually, many Massawomeck and Susquehannock people joined the Seneca tribe. However, some Massawomeck and Susquehannock moved further south. They became part of the Iroquois Meherrin tribe. This shows how Native American groups often adapted and merged over time.
